Configuration Engineer

At Kalmar, we are moving goods in critical supply chains around the world. As the forerunner in sustainable material handling equipment and services, we set the industry benchmark for a zero-emission future. We are driven by teamwork, innovation, and taking ownership to deliver results. With our global reach and local expertise, our success starts with a strong focus on the customer, ensuring their needs guide our daily work. We are dedicated to respecting others and fostering an inclusive culture where all voices are heard, empowering us to succeed together. With us, your work has an impact. Your work moves the world!

Join us and take your career to the next level

Are you an engineer or supply chain professional who loves solving complex puzzles and building systems that scale? As a Configuration Engineer, you will sit at the critical intersection of Sales, Engineering, and Supply Chain. You will translate sales order specifications into precise, production-ready Bills of Materials (BOMs) while building and improving the software tools that automate and streamline our end-to-end fulfillment process.

This is a highly collaborative, international role where you will drive efficiency, represent Order Management in new product launches, and directly impact our manufacturing throughput.

What are your key responsibilities:

Order Configuration & BOM Management:

Translate & Build: Accurately create and release configured Bills of Material (BOMs) according to unique sales order specifications, fully aligned with the production schedule.

Review & Escalate: Evaluate sales orders for complexity and configuration risks, identifying potential bottlenecks or errors and escalating them to the scheduling team.

Proactive Sourcing Support: Review technical specifications early to determine and verify part numbers for long-lead-time components, ensuring sourcing and planning teams can act early.

Adapt to Change: Rapidly revise BOMs when sales order specifications or engineering changes occur.

Tool Improvement & Data Automation:

Optimize Tools: Maintain, develop, and improve the software tools and automation scripts that support BOM creation to boost efficiency, throughput, and accuracy.

Demand Planning Support: Create and maintain forecasting tools to support long-term demand planning.

Cross-Functional Analytics: Support internal and external departments with data analysis regarding product architecture, configured sales history, and unique financial or production data requests.

Cross-Functional Leadership & Change Management:

NPD Representation: Serve as the primary Order Management voice in New Product Development (NPD) projects, ensuring new product architectures scale cleanly in our systems.

Impact Analysis: Investigate how product improvements or engineering design changes will impact demand planning tools.

Facilitate Alignment: Lead cross-functional meetings with Sales and Production teams to explain, align on, and mitigate the impacts of product changes on the broader demand plan.

Who You'll Work With:

You won't be working in a silo. On a daily basis, you will interface and collaborate with:

Sales: Front-line sales organizations across North and Latin America.

Operations: Sourcing, production planning, and assembly teams at our Ottawa factory.

Global Colleagues: Fellow Order Management team members based in the USA and Poland.

Leadership: The Terminal Tractor division management team.

What we offer you:

"Green business is good business - it's not just a slogan; we're investing in fossil-free steel and real change."

  • Rewards that truly count: We offer meaningful development opportunities through varied assignments, fair and gender-neutral pay, and flexible working conditions - all within a culture that values your growth and celebrates success.
  • Work-Life Balance: Our generous time-off policy includes vacation time, personal/sick time, paid/floating holidays, and paid parental leaves, supporting a healthy balance between your professional and personal life.
  • Safety that moves us forward: Build your career with a company rooted in safety since the 1940s, ensuring stability and an environment that empowers you to speak and be heard.
  • Purpose that drives change: You'll contribute to solutions that transform global trade, creating environmental and operational innovations. You'll be in the driver's seat of ideas, developing digital technologies that set industry standards and position us as the forerunner.
  • People who move together: You'll collaborate with people who build lasting relationships through global expertise, connections, and a commitment to sustainability.

Become part of our global network of 5,200 professionals across 120+ countries, where your work drives innovation, sustainability, and meaningful impact around the world.

What you bring to the role:

Education & Experience:

Education: 4-year University Degree (Engineering, Business, or Supply Chain) OR 4+ years of relevant equivalent work experience.

Industry Experience: 1+ years of experience in a design, sales, or supply chain role within the mobile industrial equipment industry (e.g., terminal tractors, forklifts, telehandlers, container-moving or heavy equipment).

Logistics Exposure: 1+ years of experience involving the cargo logistics industry (e.g., container handling, trailer logistics, food/beverage distribution, distribution centers, or port operations).

Technical Skills & Tools:

Core Software: Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet) for daily operations and collaboration.

CRM Systems (Plus): Experience with Customer Relationship Management software (e.g., Salesforce) is highly valued.

Business Intelligence (Plus): Experience with BI and data analysis platforms (e.g., Google Data Studio/Looker Studio, Qlik) is a strong advantage.
