Responsibilities The Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM) is a service-oriented department which is responsible for the care and well-being of multiple species of research animals. Technicians are responsible for the health and welfare of research animals, maintenance of a clean and safe facility, and provision of technical support when requested by the research staff. The DCM staff works together to provide excellent care for the animals; maintain compliance with all regulations, internal policies, and standard operating procedures; and ensure adherence to the high standards required for continued AAALAC accreditation.

The Level II Technician's primary responsibilities include all aspects of animal care including husbandry, enrichment, training, facility cleanliness and maintenance, cage and cage component processing, health checks, and administration of medication. Level II technical duties may also include anesthesia administration and monitoring, patient surgical preparation, sample collection, and other project support procedures. Level II technicians assist with or perform administrative tasks such as inventory control, stock rotation, and other duties as assigned by the Director or Supervisor.

Requires flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.

Qualifications Education:

  • Bachelor of Science or a Certified Veterinary Technician is preferred.
  • A High School diploma or GED is required.

Experience:

  • A minimum of three years of animal technical experience is required for this position.

Skills:

  • Proficient in animal handling and restraint with a variety of species.
  • Experience with surgery and anesthesia in a veterinary clinic or research setting.
  • Ability to work in a team setting as well as independently.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions.
  • Excellent observational skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and thorough records.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical functions including frequent squatting, twisting, reaching, and bending.

Licensure:

  • American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) Level must be obtained within 18 months of hire.

Pay Range: USD $25.32 - USD $36.21 /Hr.
