THE DEPARTMENT

The Pacifica Police Department is responsible for all functions related to law enforcement and crime prevention and is made up of several divisions that carry out specialized duties to help the department perform as a cohesive whole. Staff includes forty-three (43) full-time positions consisting of the Police Chief, 2 Captains, 7 Sergeants, 7 Corporals, 19 Officers, a Records Supervisor, 2 Records Specialist, 2 Evidence Technicians, 1 full-time Community Service Officer, 2.5 grant-funded Community Service Officers, and an Administrative Assistant.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision relieves sworn police personnel from a variety of non-hazardous tasks and responds to service calls of a non-felonious and non-violent nature; performs certain telecommunications tasks as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is an entry-level, non-sworn position that provides administrative support to police operations staff.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

The Community Services Officer receives general supervision from a Sergeant or Corporal.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS-INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Respond to a wide variety of non-hazardous service calls and thoroughly investigate all details of incidents.
  • Observe, report and may follow-up on conditions which pose potential threats to public safety, health and welfare and the quality of life.
  • Read and write at the levels necessary to perform the job of a community service officer.
  • Write non-moving parking violations.
  • Act as department liaison between homeless persons and local homeless, mental health, and social services providers.
  • Investigate, report on, and arrange for towing of abandoned vehicles on public and private property.
  • Provide traffic control at emergency situations, special events and at other times as assigned.
  • Respond to, or assist sworn officers at accident or crime scenes by taking reports and photographs, fingerprints, prepare diagrams and other activities as assigned.
  • Transport officers, equipment, witnesses, citizens as assigned.
  • Provide special duties such as Court and District Attorney liaison, Crime Prevention and others as assigned.
  • Operate records management systems and law enforcement databases.
  • Keep confidential information obtained from law enforcement systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
