Community Service Technician - Police Department
The City of Columbus has a current job opening and is accepting applications for the position of fulltime Community Service Technician with the Columbus Police Department.
This is responsible municipal law enforcement work in a non-sworn class within the police department.
The incumbent must be able to act without direct supervision and exercise independent judgment in meeting both routine and emergency situations. Work is performed under the supervision of the Support Division Commander; assignments are directed through the Support Commander who reviews work methods and results through reports, observations, discussions, and performance evaluations.
Instructions are received based upon the type of assignment and situation at the time. Working a scene or situation with either an Investigator or Patrol Officer, CSTs will work in conjunction with and at the direction of those sworn staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Acting as liaison with area towing companies and managing city impound lot.
- Primary responsibility serving as the property control officer; receives, stores, and disposes of property and evidence and maintains the chain of evidence; maintains records of property and evidence. Responsible for researching property/evidence owners and sending owner letters for property/evidence for the return of property/evidence to the rightful owner; responsible for lab submittals and returns of property/evidence to and from the different labs for evidence processing; Releases property/evidence in accordance with state laws/statutes, County Attorney authorization, Court disposition, and department policy.
- Responsible for Discoveries for the County Attorney and Defense Attorneys and miscellaneous requests to include but not limited to physical property, digital property and videos.
- Responsible for video downloads for PD/body cams/In-Cars/Surveillance Video, in addition to going to businesses and residences to obtain surveillance videos from their systems.
- Maintains Impound Facility; Release vehicles and/or property from vehicles from the City Impound Lot; Responsible for Fuel inventory and maintenance.
- Assists in physical maintenance of Police Department building, grounds, and equipment and fleet maint.
- Tows vehicles to the City Impound lot for parking violations, arrests, search warrants/evidence, and other various reasons
- Assists with traffic control, stands by for tow trucks at accident and crime scenes, funeral processions and motorist assists, takes offense report on "cold" property crimes.
- Completes various statistical reports and research projects as directed; designs and implements intelligence database and aids in the production of informational intelligence from data collected; work with investigators and officers in the application of intelligence data.
Qualifications
- Some experience in a law enforcement-related occupation and knowledge of street layout and geography of the city
