General Purpose
This position is responsible for performing a variety of fieldwork in support of basic police operations and functions.
Union Affiliation: American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME)
Pay Grade 15: $28.65 - $31.92 Hourly
Remote Tier 1: Zero (0) days remote/month
Essential Job Functions
- Performs shift work in a rotation of days, evenings, and nights, including weekends.
- Performs a variety of routine technical, administrative work in support of law enforcement activities.
- Works under the close supervision of the shift Officer in Charge.
- Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
- Performs front desk duties, including but not limited to receiving visitors to the Police Department, directing persons to the appropriate office, answering and directing phone calls, and relaying messages to field police personnel via radio.
- Conduct Vehicle Identification Number verifications pursuant to Department of Motor Vehicles requirements.
- Take fingerprints, by appointment, for people seeking fingerprint-supported background checks for various reasons, e.g., employment, adoptions, etc.
- Enforce Parking regulations and towing of vehicles.
- Enforce animal regulations.
- Assists certified patrol officers in performing traffic control, such as crash-scene traffic control, special events control, and other similar situations at the direction of the Officer in Charge.
- Take crash reports for non-investigatory, non-injury vehicle crashes.
- Assists officers in requesting and ensuring vehicle tows are completed at crash scenes and other arrest situations where a vehicle is involved.
- Serves subpoenas or other department paperwork (exclusive of warrants, citations, summons, and trespass warnings); delivers court paperwork.
- Issue Vermont Municipal Complaints (VMCs) for specific violations of civil municipal code, such as illegal dumping, noise, and other ordinance violations.
- Transport department vehicles (exclusive of marked vehicles EXCEPT when those vehicles are out of service for transport).
- Perform excellent customer service skills, establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.
- Perform foot patrol in various Burlington neighborhoods and parks to project presence and foster strong community relationships.
- Conduct child safety seat inspections.
- Perform data entry.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must be eighteen (18) years of age.
- Must be able to meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) standards established by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) within six (6) months of hire date.
- Must successfully pass written examination, panel interview, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), and background check conducted by the department.
- Regular attendance is necessary and is essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions.
- Ability to understand and comply with City standards, safety rules and personnel policies.
- After acceptance of a conditional offer of employment, the applicant must pass a physical examination by the Medical Board
- Working knowledge of standard office equipment and Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work independently and manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats.
- Ability to apply tact and discretion in working with the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective employee and public relations.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Must have three (3) years of customer service experience
- Must be federally qualified to carry and discharge a firearm
