Description / Position Overview

Community Medicine Units (CMED) respond to calls in the City of Colorado Springs 911 system. Come be a part of our nationally awarded tiered response system, on the front lines, serving the citizens of Colorado Springs.

Community Health Paramedic (CMED)

The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) is hiring two paramedics to staff community medicine units. In this position, you will provide medical assistance to support CSFDs tiered response model. You will be providing basic medical care and/or advanced life support. Necessary job duties include medical evaluation, treatment, and stabilization of the physically and mentally ill, or injured. Paramedics staffing these units will be required to work schedules meeting program needs.

Essential Job Functions - the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:

  • Evaluate pending 911 calls for appropriate response
  • Respond to calls and facilitate the best service for our citizens
  • Evaluate and advocate for appropriate patient navigation
  • Conduct patient education
  • Assist police/fire units and community agencies
  • Operate lightweight, non-emergent vehicles in all weather conditions
  • Administer patient care consistent with department physician guidelines
  • Document patient care reports using the ESO system

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:

Knowledge of:

  • Organizational objectives, procedures, policies, and regulations
  • Utilization of technology to perform job duties
  • Patient care reporting and basic medical terminology

Ability to:

  • Critical thinking and problem solve
  • Prioritize tasks
  • Do math computations
  • Conduct and document thorough patient assessments and treatment in accordance with department policies and medical director expectations
  • Demonstrate effective leadership and customer service
  • Make decisions within the scope of assigned authority
  • Communicate clearly
  • Maintain confidentiality

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • One year of full-time Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) experience
  • Possess, or obtain upon hire and maintain, a valid, non-probationary Colorado drivers license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
  • Possess current ACLS (or CO state approved equivalent), CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and State of Colorado or National Registry EMT-P certifications

One year of relevant work experience may be substituted for one year of required education (OR) one year of relevant academic coursework beyond the minimum requirement may be substituted for one year of required professional experience.

The background check for this position includes a fingerprint and background check through the Colorado Springs Police Department.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in the El Paso County 911 system
  • Possess working knowledge of current El Paso County physician advisor guidelines
  • Prior experience with community health medicine

Additional Information

This position is eligible for Public Employee's Retirement Association (PERA) benefits.

Physical Demands: This position requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, 25 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly.

Specialized Computer Equipment and Software: Microsoft Office and Electronic Health Records software.
