Job Description

This is not a remote position. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at DPS Fleet & Supply in Des Moines.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety is seeking to fill a Communications Technician 2 position within the Department's Fleet & Supply Operations.

Job Description

  • Installation/up-fit, support and maintenance of police electronic equipment and components in fleet law enforcement vehicles, trailers, or other projects.
  • Job knowledge in electronics, automotive, two-way radio communication systems, and communication/data systems.
  • Removal of police equipment out of high mileage police vehicles and make same equipment ready for the next patrol car.
  • After removing equipment from police vehicles then make vehicles ready for auction.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and make repairs of DPS equipment malfunctioning in vehicles as needed.
  • Support and maintain radar and mobile video platforms.
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals and wiring diagrams.
  • Use electronic and diagnostic testing equipment as required on equipment.
  • Maintain Fleet and Supply / Garage Facility and tools as necessary to ensure an efficient and working environment.
  • Work with salvage vehicle parts and related equipment parts as needed in the DPS Fleet.
  • Assist with inventory of shop equipment, tools, supplies, and materials as needed.
  • Assist in asset reutilization.
  • Maintain neat and accurate repair records.

Additional Requirements

  • The State of Iowa is an E-Verify Employer.
  • Candidates must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation conducted by the Iowa Department of Public Safety investigators before a final letter of employment offer is delivered.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Iowa driver's license.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Two years of full-time work experience in telecommunication/radio system design, installation, or service.
  • A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in electronic technology equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as a Communications Technician 1.

Additional Qualification Requirements

  • Within a period of time after hire, as determined by the appointing authority, employees in this class may be required to obtain a chauffers license.
  • Positions in this class may require the ability to pass a background investigation.
  • Travel, including overnight travel, may be required for positions in this class. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.

All of the following apply to Department of Transportation positions only:

  • Possession of a valid drivers license is required.
  • Designated positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learners Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Commercial Drivers License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained to continue employment.
  • In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382), designated positions in this job class require a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employers random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Prior to starting employment, all persons are required to have a post offer, pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
  • Some positions in this class may require the ability to maintain certification for the Iowa System and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).
