Job Description

Want to gain real-world communications experience while gaining firsthand experience in local government and exploring local government career opportunities? Join the City Managers Office as a Communications Intern and help promote City services, projects, initiatives, accomplishments, and events through engaging digital communications and community outreach. Youll develop professional writing, editing, and organizational skills while working closely with the City's senior management team.

Requirements:

  • Current or recent enrollment at a college or university in a marketing, business, communication and journalism, political science, or a related field
  • Must have experience using Canva or other design software and Microsoft Office software, specifically Word

Length of Internship:

  • Approximately 20 hours per week for 20 weeks, flexible scheduling Monday through Friday.

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION SCOPE

The Marketing Intern will support the City Manager's marketing, outreach, and communications efforts to promote City services, projects, initiatives, accomplishments, and events. Under the direct supervision of City Manager, the intern will coordinate the preparation of a weekly digital newsletter. The intern will have exposure to the many facets of local government while developing professional communication, editing, and organizational skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Coordinates the creation of a weekly digital newsletter for distribution to the community. This includes communicating with City department and division heads to collect newsletter submissions in a timely manner, editing submissions for consistency and grammar, and organizing content into a draft.

Assists in the development and execution of marketing and public outreach campaigns to promote City services.

Assists in the development and implementation of social media strategies to effectively communicate with the public and disseminate information with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.

Assists with creation of engaging content, including graphics, videos, and infographics, to enhance the City's online presence.

Assists in the development and dissemination of internal newsletters, memos, and other communications materials.

Assists with drafting new releases, statements, and media advisories. Writes, produces, and distributes internal and external electronic notices and updates.

Assists with coordinating the gathering and analysis of demographic, market, and other information necessary for formulating and evaluating the effectiveness of the City's overall communications strategy.

Assists the Media/Communications Specialist with the implementation of the new City website.

Perform general clerical tasks, such as data entry, creating reports, and maintaining contact lists.

Maintains confidentiality and professionalism in sensitive situations.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs related duties as required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS

Current or recent enrollment at a college or university in a marketing, business, communication and journalism, public administration, or a related field is required.

Must have experience using Canva or other design software and Microsoft Office software, specifically Word.

Must have experience with various social medica platforms.

Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, and proficiency in multi-tasking.

Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance.

Must be able to take direction and work well with others.

Must be able to concentrate and perform accurately.
