DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Communications and Marketing Coordinator serves as a key member of the Police Department's administrative team, supporting public communications, community engagement, recruitment efforts, and executive operations. This position is responsible for developing and managing digital content, coordinating social media communications, assisting with media relations, and supporting departmental events and ceremonies. The coordinator works closely with the Chief Administrative Officer and the Public Information Officer to promote departmental initiatives, enhance public awareness, and strengthen community engagement through strategic communications and marketing. This position reports to the Chief Administrative Officer. Additional responsibilities include:
- Develop and produce digital content, including photographs, videos, graphics, and other marketing materials to promote department programs, initiatives, achievements, and recruitment efforts.
- Manage and maintain departmental social media accounts, ensuring timely, accurate, and engaging content. • Assist with researching, drafting, and coordinating responses to media inquiries. •
Participate in a rotating on-call schedule to support public communications and media releases related to critical incidents, as needed.
- Support the daily operations of the Office of the Chief by coordinating calendars, scheduling meetings, and preparing meeting materials and presentations.
- Prepare reports, presentations, and supporting materials for executive meetings, and other leadership briefings.
- Design and produce promotional materials, programs, graphics, and informational resources for departmental initiatives such as the Youth Public Safety Academy and other community outreach programs.
- Assist with planning, coordinating, and executing departmental ceremonies, special events, recognition programs, and community engagement activities.
- Collaborate with departmental leadership to identify opportunities to enhance public awareness, community engagement, and recruitment through effective communication strategies.
- Provide administrative and project support for communications initiatives and other duties as assigned.
- Required to obtain and maintain Delaware Criminal Justice Information Systems (DELJIS)
- Performs all related work as required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, or Journalism, or a related field. Preferred: Prior experience in the public sector.
- Knowledge: Knowledge of communications, public relations, media relations, and digital marketing principles, including the effective use of social media and multimedia platforms. Understanding of criminal justice operations, community-centered public safety strategies, and public information practices.
- Skills: Strong skills in written and verbal communication, content creation, social media management, graphic design, and multimedia production. Ability to develop engaging communications materials and manage multiple projects while meeting established deadlines.
- Abilities: Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Ability to collaborate effectively with leadership, media representatives, and community stakeholders while maintaining professionalism and attention to detail.
- Licenses: Required to obtain and maintain Delaware Criminal Justice Information Systems (DELJIS) access by completing all required checks within the first 6 months of employment. Must possess and maintain a driver's license with a good driving record.
CANDIDATE EVALUATION

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
All selected applicants must pass a criminal background investigation and a pre-employment physical.
- Physical Requirements: Works in an office and in outside weather conditions. Occasionally required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. • Vision: Required vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Working Conditions: Work is typically performed in an office environment with low noise levels. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, and talk or hear. . Specifically, work with the use of a computer, cellular phone, digital camera, and video camera, in addition to standard office equipment like desk phones and printers/copiers. The majority of functions will involve a computer and a cellular phone. Occasionally exposed to inclement weather conditions. Moderate outdoor work is required when addressing traumatic and/or other community-based events.
- Location: Business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, in the Wilmington Police Department/Public Safety building, 300 N Walnut Street, Wilmington, DE 19801. During peak periods or when the workload is high, the position may require additional hours beyond the standard workweek.

Compensation encompasses both salary administration and a comprehensive benefit package:
- Salary Administration: New employees are hired at the starting and up to the median salary/step four based on qualifications and internal equity within the classification. Annual merit increases are provided based on a satisfactory performance review.

Sick Leave: Accumulates at the rate of one day for each completed month of service, beginning after the first full month of employment.
Vacation: At least eight (8) hours of vacation per month after the completion of the first six (6) months of continuous employment until the next January 1. Each January 1 thereafter, employee will be credited with at least ninety-six (96) hours* of vacation for the calendar year, until the completion of five (5) years of continuous service.
