Commissioning Specialist

Job Type: Contract-to-Hire

Aspen Technical Staffing is seeking an experienced Commissioning Specialist for a contract-to-hire opportunity with our client in Houston, TX. This position offers the opportunity to support a variety of commissioning projects for new construction, renovation, existing facilities, and asset management initiatives. The ideal candidate will have extensive commissioning experience, strong technical expertise, and the ability to work collaboratively with project teams, clients, and contractors to deliver high-quality results.

Position Overview

As a Commissioning Specialist, you will participate in both office and field activities, leading and executing commissioning efforts throughout all phases of project delivery. You will be responsible for testing, startup, quality assurance, and functional performance verification of building systems to ensure facilities operate safely, efficiently, and in accordance with design intent and owner expectations.

This role offers a blend of office and field work with travel to project sites as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead commissioning activities for building and infrastructure projects from planning through project completion.
  • Perform and oversee commissioning documentation, field inspections, and system verification.
  • Conduct QA/QC inspections and functional performance testing of building systems.
  • Coordinate equipment and system startup activities with contractors and project teams.
  • Verify mechanical, plumbing, electrical, controls, and facility systems operate according to design requirements.
  • Review project drawings, specifications, and submittals for commissioning compliance.
  • Develop commissioning plans, procedures, checklists, and final reports.
  • Identify deficiencies, track issues, and coordinate corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with owners, contractors, design teams, and facility personnel throughout the commissioning process.
  • Support existing building commissioning, retro-commissioning, and asset management projects.
  • Assist with project scheduling, planning, and commissioning deliverables.
  • Travel to project sites as required to support commissioning activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Building Systems, or a related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive commissioning experience.
  • Strong background commissioning:
    • Utility infrastructure systems
    • Mechanical systems
    • Plumbing systems
    • Building automation systems (Client)
    • HVAC controls
    • Building and facility systems
    • Facility operations and maintenance
  • Mission Critical facility commissioning experience is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • ASHRAE guidelines
    • NFPA codes
    • TAB (Testing, Adjusting & Balancing) processes
    • Mechanical testing procedures and applicable building codes
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
  • Industry-recognized commissioning certification is preferred (such as CxA, CBCP, CCP, or similar).
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.

Travel Requirements

  • Ability to travel up to 50%.
  • Travel may include multi-week field assignments and occasional longer-term project support.
