The Code Compliance Officer for Building & Development Services is responsible for on-site field enforcement of various ordinances, regulations and procedures to protect health, safety and welfare of the general public and enhance quality of life within Floyd County under the jurisdiction of the Floyd County Commissioners.

Responsibilities

Receives, processes and follows up on complaints received involving compliance with the Zoning Ordinance, Unsafe Building Ordinance, and any other ordinances as directed by the County Commissioners and Development Services Director.

Initiates and posts any required paperwork relative to inspections, project compliance and complaint responses.

Collects and documents all evidence regarding any potential legal proceedings necessary relative to the enforcement of said ordinances.

Writes citations, notices of abatement, follow-up letters and compliance notifications necessary to appropriately enforce ordinances.

Prepares reports and written summaries of cases and activities.

Assist Building & Development staff with general duties such as answering phone, responding to in person inquiries, office coverage, etc.

Performs related duties as assigned by Director.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED, with education beyond high school preferred.

Ability to pass County and department hiring requirements including criminal background and motor vehicle record checks.

Working knowledge of and ability to read, interpret and explain applicable laws, ordinances, property legal descriptions, and aerial and plat maps.

Ability to comprehend, explain and enforce County codes and State statutory code enforcement procedures.

Ability to work outdoors in all weather for investigations of potential health hazards, unsafe structures, walking through overgrown areas and investigating dumpsites.

Ability to prioritize and work on several tasks at the same time, work rapidly for long periods and complete assignments effectively amidst frequent distractions and interruptions.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, and the public.

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding County’s issues and projects.

Ability to work occasionally extended, weekend and/or evening hours. Flexibility is key.

Possession of a valid Indiana driver’s license.
