Job Summary:

Responsible for maximizing production efficiency, part quality, and machine uptime by refining cutting parameters, programming, tooling, and workflows.

Job Duties:

  • Review existing CNC programs to identify opportunities to improve cycle time, reliability, quality, and consistency.
  • Update and optimize CNC code (e.g., feeds/speeds, smoothing) while maintaining print/spec compliance.
  • Validate optimized programs through simulation and controlled prove-ins; document results and implement changes per change-control requirements.
  • Evaluate current tooling, toolholders, and cutting strategies; recommend and implement improvements to increase tool life, reduce scrap, and improve throughput.
  • Standardize machining methods across similar part families, including preferred tooling, cutting parameters, and program structure/naming conventions.
  • Partner with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Operators to troubleshoot machining issues (chatter, burrs, dimensional instability, surface finish, tool wear) and implement corrective actions.
  • Analyze machine capability and process constraints (spindle load, work holding, coolant delivery) and propose practical process improvements.
  • Maintain accurate CNC documentation, including setup sheets, tool lists, offsets, revision history, and "as-run" program backups.
  • Support safe and efficient machine startups by ensuring programs include appropriate safeguards (safe starts, tool breakage/probing routines, collision avoidance best practices).
  • Use data (cycle time studies, tool life tracking, scrap/rework trends, machine alarms) to prioritize optimization work and report measurable gains.
  • Train and support machinists and setup personnel on updated programs, tooling changes, and standardized best practices.
  • Ensure all optimized programs and tooling changes follow company procedures for revision control, documentation, and compliance requirements.

Qualifications:

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of G-code and M-code for CNC machines
  • Knowledgeable in Computer-Aided Design software - AutoCAD or Solidworks
  • Experience with Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) EdgeCam
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of blueprint readings
  • Familiar with machining of plastics
  • Background in machining with MAZAK lathes and mills (4 and 5 axis, single/dual spindle)
  • Knowledgeable in continuous improvement/problem solving methodology

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience
  • Associates Degree in Precision Machining or equivalent degree preferred

Mathematical Skills

  • Basic math skills including trigonometry.

Requires frequent standing. Good dexterity and attention to detail through visual/measurement inspection.

Job requires employee to work with coolants; medium noise level; some dust exposure when grinding or deburring material.
