Step Into the Shop Floor

At our Derby, KS facility, your day begins with a print in one hand and a plan in mind. As a Machining Specialist on one of our available shifts, you translate drawings, sketches, and router instructions into precise parts that keep production moving in a fast-paced environment.

A Day in the Life

  • Study blueprints, sketches, specifications, manuals, and sample parts to confirm dimensions, tolerances, the machining sequence, and setup needs.
  • Lay out material by measuring, marking, and scribing reference lines according to router direction and sound shop practice.
  • Select, align, and secure fixtures, tooling, attachments, and materials; improvise setups with risers, angle plates, and other common tooling when required.
  • Dial in machining parameters—speed, feed, coolant flow, depth/angle of cut—or enter/edit CNC control media to achieve optimal results.
  • Closely observe machine behavior to anticipate or spot malfunctions or out-of-tolerance conditions, then make the correct control or program adjustments.
  • Validate each detail against print or router requirements using precision metrology; request first-piece inspection on multi-piece runs.
  • Run a trial part to verify machine settings, tooling, and programmed control data before moving to production.
  • Stay ahead by reviewing the next job’s routers, programs, setup sheets, and tool lists while the current part is cutting.
  • Fit and assemble parts into complete units using jigs, fixtures, surface plate/table techniques, and both hand and power tools.
  • Confirm final assembly dimensions and alignment using micrometers, height gages, and gauge blocks.
  • Record accurate time and activity in the data collection system for precise labor reporting.
  • Keep machines and your work area clean and orderly each day.
  • At times, install machined replacement parts in equipment and test function under the direction of maintenance.
  • On occasion, translate general descriptions into simple specifications and sketches for fabrication.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot issues to maintain peak machine performance.
  • Partner with teammates to improve processes and elevate throughput and quality.

What You Bring

  • Four years of trade school, vocational education, or apprenticeship (minimum).
  • Specialized hands-on experience with specific materials, product types, precision levels, machining processes, or particular machine types/brands.
  • Five or more years of professional machining experience.
  • Proficiency operating both CNC and manual equipment.
  • Deep knowledge of machining practices, tooling, and materials.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret technical documents and blueprints.
  • Uncompromising attention to detail and quality.
  • Resourceful problem-solver who works well independently and in a team.
