Job Description
CNC Machinists are responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of CNC lathe machines to produce complex aerospace components with precision and efficiency. Depending on experience and skill level, machinists may work under direct supervision or operate independently, demonstrating increasing levels of technical expertise, problem-solving ability, and leadership.
In addition to production machining, this role may support prototyping and proto shop activities, requiring the ability to interpret raw engineering sketches or blueprints and fabricate functional components from scratch-often without established CNC programs or pre-set tooling.
Core Responsibilities
- Operate CNC machine equipment to meet production rate and quality standards
- Load and unload materials and parts from machines
- Perform routine machine upkeep, including chip removal, surface cleaning, and maintaining coolant, oil, and lubrication levels
- Perform in-process inspections using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, air gauges, feeler gauges, and other inspection equipment
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering sketches, and work instructions
- Monitor machine performance and cutting conditions; report issues to shift lead or supervisor
- Deburr and edge-break parts as required
- Set up machines by loading fixtures, tools, and CNC programs, and adjusting offsets to maintain dimensional accuracy (based on experience level)
- Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshoot machining processes to optimize performance
Advanced / Experience-Based Responsibilities
- Operate multiple machines and apply Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques
- Perform basic CNC program edits, including G-code adjustments (e.g., feed/speed changes, adding passes)
- Design and set up complex tooling and part layouts
- Support prototyping efforts by fabricating components from limited or evolving design inputs
- Perform rework and modification of parts, including diagnosing defects or nonconformances and adjusting parts to meet updated specifications or repair requirements
- Demonstrate advanced manual lathe expertise, including independently setting up, operating, and troubleshooting manual machines for turning, facing, threading, and precision finishing
- Train and mentor junior machinists and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
Duties & Responsibilities
- Follow all safety policies (PPE, machine operation, LOTO), quality standards, and 6S organizational practices
- Complete required documentation to ensure quality and traceability
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment
- Perform other duties as assigned
Experience & Qualifications
- 1 to 6+ years of CNC lathe experience or equivalent combination of training and hands-on experience
- Previous manufacturing or aerospace experience preferred
- Experience in prototyping or proto shop environments strongly preferred
- Strong manual lathe skills, including setup, operation, and troubleshooting
- Proven ability to perform part rework, modification, and repair
- Solid understanding of shop math
- Proficiency with precision measuring tools and inspection techniques
- Familiarity with CNC programming concepts and G-code editing preferred
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with ERP systems
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English, including interpreting technical documents and blueprints
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
