Job Description

We are seeking an experienced CNC Lathe Setup Operator with a minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience in precision machining and CNC lathe operations. The ideal candidate is a highly skilled CNC professional with extensive machine setup experience, strong troubleshooting abilities, and the capability to independently create or modify Mastercam programs to support efficient, high-quality production. This individual serves as a technical resource for the shop and helps drive continuous improvement in machining operations. This individual will be responsible for program optimization, first-piece inspections, process improvements, and ensuring production of high-quality components while maintaining efficiency and safety standards.


Essential Responsibilities:

CNC Machine Setup & Operation

  • Perform complete setups on CNC lathes, including tooling, fixturing, offsets, and machine adjustments.
  • Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, GD&T, and work instructions.
  • Load, edit, and verify CNC programs to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
  • Perform first article inspections and make necessary program or tooling adjustments.
  • Monitor machine performance and maintain dimensional accuracy throughout production runs.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues related to tooling, machine parameters, materials, and processes


Programming & Process Development:

  • Edit CNC programs at the machine control as needed.
  • Preferred ability to create and modify programs using Mastercam software.
  • Optimize cycle times while maintaining quality and tooling life.
  • Develop setup sheets, tooling lists, and process documentation.
  • Collaborate with engineering and quality teams on new product introductions and process improvements.


Quality Control:

  • Inspect parts using precision measuring instruments including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, height gauges, and CMM reports.
  • Ensure all products meet customer specifications and quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate production and inspection records.
  • Identify and resolve quality concerns before production continues.


Continuous Improvement:

  • Recommend improvements to tooling, fixturing, programming, and machining processes.
  • Assist in reducing setup times and improving machine utilization.
  • Support Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Train and mentor less experienced machinists and setup operators.


Safety & Housekeeping:

  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Ensure proper machine maintenance and report equipment issues promptly.


Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical or trade school certification preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of CNC lathe setup and operation experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of G-code and M-code programming.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and GD&T.
  • Proficiency with precision measuring equipment and inspection techniques.
  • Experience machining a variety of materials including steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and specialty alloys.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Mastercam programming experience.
  • Experience with multi-axis CNC lathes, live tooling, and Y-axis machining.
  • Experience with Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, Okuma, or Siemens controls.
  • Knowledge of tooling selection, cutting parameters, and process optimization.
  • Prior experience training or mentoring other machinists.
  • Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and electronic production documentation.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
