Role Purpose

The CMM Operator is responsible for performing precision dimensional inspections using Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) equipment to ensure sheet metal and machined components meet engineering, customer, and regulatory requirements. This position supports First Article Inspections (FAI), in-process inspections, final inspections, and capability studies in compliance with AS9100 and AS9102 standards.

Scope & Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate manual and/or CNC Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) equipment
  • Develop, edit, and validate CMM programs using applicable software platforms such as PC-DMIS or Calypso
  • Optimize CMM programs for repeatability, accuracy, and efficiency
  • Maintain probe calibration and qualification routines
  • Perform dimensional inspections on:
    • CNC milled components
    • Turned parts
    • Tight-tolerance aerospace hardware
    • Complex geometric features
  • Inspect sheet metal assemblies for profile, true position, flatness, perpendicularity, and related GD&T characteristics
  • Verify features including hole location and diameter, surface profiles, geometric tolerances, and thread features when applicable
  • Support AS9102-compliant First Article Inspection (FAI) activities
  • Document inspection results and maintain accurate quality records
  • Collaborate with machinists, engineers, and quality personnel to resolve dimensional discrepancies
  • Follow all quality procedures, work instructions, and safety requirements
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on business needs
Work Experience & Skills

Education
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Technical degree or certification in metrology, manufacturing technology, or related field preferred
Experience
  • Experience operating CMM equipment in a manufacturing environment required
  • Aerospace, sheet metal, or machine shop inspection experience strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with AS9100 quality management systems and AS9102 First Article Inspection requirements preferred
Skills / Knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications
  • Experience using common CMM software platforms such as PC-DMIS or Calypso
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical problem-solving skills
  • Effective communication skills with machinists, engineers, and quality personnel
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Working Conditions
  • Manufacturing floor environment with frequent standing and walking
  • Exposure to noise, dust, metal shavings, and occasional sharp objects
  • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection as applicable

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift and/or move objects up to 30 pounds
  • Frequent use of hands and repetitive motions
  • Visual acuity, with or without correction, required for detailed inspection activities, including color differentiation
