Primary Care Physician with possibility of Hospital Duties

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine Department of Family & Community Medicine seeks qualified and dynamic Family Medicine Physicians interested in joining its faculty and passionate about service, education, scholarship, and leadership. Candidates hired for this position will provide patient care in outpatient and potentially inpatient settings and support departmental education and scholarship efforts. Physicians interested in securing funds for research projects are also encouraged to apply. While we seek faculty who are committed to advancing primary care, we encourage Family Medicine educators to apply with expertise in areas such as addiction medicine, sports medicine, reproductive justice, gender-affirming care, and care for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

This position will include primary care work in a newly built clinic with a dedicated patient panel and duties supervising Family Medicine residents in the ambulatory setting. This clinic will meet the standards as a Patient-Centered Medical Home with multi-disciplinary teams and house pharmacy, laboratory, and radiology services. This position could also include clinical work on one or more of the following hospital academic services: obstetrics and maternal-child health, hospital medicine, newborn nursery, and/or intermediate care nursery.

The educational duties will include teaching UNM medical students, physician assistant students, and family medicine residents and fellows. The Family Medicine faculty will join a renowned and well-established academic Family Medicine department offering opportunities in teaching and curricular development, clinical quality improvement, innovations, community-engaged collaborative research, and other scholarly activities.

Family-Based Clinical Care

In the clinical setting, the new faculty member will provide primary care to a panel of patients at one of our Family Medicine clinics utilizing a Patient-Centered Medical Home model and will have the opportunity to supervise residents in this environment. Family Medicine faculty provide care in the Maternal Child Health service, a Family Medicine obstetric service, the Family Medicine Inpatient Service, which provides care to adult and pediatric patients, the Newborn Nursery, and the Intermediate Care Nursery.

In this position, new faculty will provide service and supervise residents on one or two teaching services as part of their job duties.

Innovative Education

We are recognized nationally and internationally for our educational innovation. Our departments and areas of academic expertise include the social determinants of health, community health and engagement, culturally effective care, addiction medicine, and point-of-care ultrasound. Our faculty are major contributors to the education of medical and PA students at UNM, and our residency program offers opportunities for rotations in rural and underserved settings as well as within UNM. We have several Fellowships, including Maternal Child Health, Sports Medicine, and Addiction Medicine.

We boast a large number of residents practicing in New Mexico. We host a 3rd year Family Medicine clerkship for all medical students. We are the departmental home of the UNM Physician Assistant Program.
