Department Summary: Office of Research & Innovation, Division of Animal Resources invites applicants to apply for an outstanding opportunity to join our Veterinary Team as a Clinical Veterinary.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Clinical Veterinarian supports the VCU mission of providing humane and ethical animal

care across a diverse biomedical research portfolio. This role is a critical component of the

veterinary services team, providing clinical and perisurgical oversight across a decentralized,

two-campus program.

The incumbent will work under the administrative direction of and receive clinical mentorship

from the Associate Director the Associate Director of Veterinary Services. The role focuses on

high-quality medical care for all species, with an emphasis on large animal (swine) models and

USDA-regulated research

General Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Clinical Care & Surgical Support

Conduct clinical rounds and provide medical care for rodents, rabbits, fish, and

agricultural species (swine).

Deliver expert anesthesia and surgical support, assisting PIs with protocol refinement

and perioperative care for large animal models.

Oversee and mentor veterinary technicians in clinical task execution and treatment

delivery.

  1. Decentralized Program Operations

Manage clinical priorities across multiple facilities on two distinct campuses, ensuring

consistent standards of care and regulatory compliance in multiple vivariums in an urban

setting.

Maintain a high level of professional autonomy to resolve facility-specific veterinary

issues independently.

  1. Regulatory Compliance & Documentation

Ensure accurate medical record-keeping in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act,

PHS Policy, and AAALAC International standards.

Serve as a voting member of the VCU IACUC. Associated duties include protocol

review, drafting or reviewing policies, conducting veterinary observations, subcommittee

participation, and providing consultations to investigators.

  1. Emergency & On-Call Services

Participate in a rotating weekend and holiday on-call schedule for veterinary

emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

DVM/VMD from an AVMA-accredited institution.

Ability to obtain a Virginia Veterinary License and DEA registration.

Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

Board Status: ACLAM board-eligible (residency completed) or board-certified.

Large Animal Competency: Experience in the handling, anesthesia, and clinical

management of swine or other agricultural species in a research setting.

Autonomy: Proven ability to manage clinical priorities in a decentralized or multi-site

environment.

Salary Range: $126,000-$150,000
