Job Summary
The Senior Clinical Technologist plans and implements special, complex procedures for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, along with assisting in the establishment and maintenance of quality control standards.
Responsibilities*
In addition to performing the duties of a medical technologist at a high level of expertise, and with assistance from Medical Technologist Specialists, the Senior Clinical Technologist is normally responsible for and oversees the following activities in their area of expertise.
Technical Lead:
QC/QA/Compliance
Training/Competency
IT Tasks
Validations
Perform Testing for Waived, Moderate, and High Complexity Tests
Other Duties
Duties and Responsibilities
All previously mentioned functions including:
Maintain expertise in area.
Writing and maintaining documents and SOP?s in MediaLab.
Other duties as assigned
Knowledge of or experience with microorganisms in a clinical setting, ability to recognize and identify pathogenic organisms and understand the criteria for susceptibility testing on appropriate organisms.
Knowledge of or experience with blood culture systems, bacterial identification systems, susceptibility systems, and molecular based technologies.
Ability to explain microbiology culture reports and specimen requirements for testing to all clients.
Is motivated to be part of a team effort, contribute to improvements and support initiatives in the lab.
Use critical thinking to problem solve, follow up with documentation and technical support when required.
Supervision Received
Administrative supervision is received from the Administrative Manager, or other designee.
Functional supervision is received from a qualified Supervisor, Administrative Manager, or other designee.

Required Qualifications*
In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment. Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or other biological science.

Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist or eligibility for certification at the time of hire.
12 hours of continuing education is required for all laboratory personnel performing testing on specimens from the State of New York. Based on the recertification requirements for laboratory testing personnel, it is recommended that testing personnel obtain 12 hours of continuing education per year.
Certification in working area.
Specialized laboratories may accept a bachelor's degree in a biological science with certification eligibility specific to that laboratory.
Molecular Microbiology Senior Technologist must have 4 years post training work experience in Quantitative Viral Load (NAAT) and Lab Developed NAATs on Micro-Molecular Platforms.
Day shift positions must have a minimum of 4 years (Post training), Afternoons and Midnights must have a minimum of 2 years (Post training), clinical experience relevant to the position.
Must have demonstrated ability to perform the duties of an MLS at a high level of expertise, and the ability to perform the assigned work without sacrificing on patient care.
Requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, and hand pipetting for long periods of time and the ability to lift 25 lbs.

Work Schedule
this full time position is Exempt and is a minimum of 40 hours a week on the day shift requiring rotating weekends, holidays and on-call.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
