Overview:
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice nurse and clinical leader for a mixed inpatient unit with emphasis on stroke care, epilepsy management, and medical-surgical telemetry. The CNS drives high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centered care across the continuum and serves as an expert resource for patients, families, nursing staff, and the interdisciplinary team. This role supports Magnet principles, quality outcomes, and professional nursing practice.
Population Served
Adult and geriatric patients in an inpatient setting.
Responsibilities:
Clinical Expertise & Direct Care
- Provides expert assessment and management of patients with acute stroke, seizure disorders, and complex medical-surgical conditions requiring telemetry monitoring.
- Applies evidence-based guidelines for stroke care (including NIHSS), epilepsy management, and telemetry practices.
- Serves as a clinical resource for complex patient cases and neurologic or cardiac changes.
- Leads development and implementation of clinical pathways, protocols, and standards of care.
Consultation & Collaboration
- Provides consultation to nursing staff, providers, and interdisciplinary teams.
- Collaborates with neurology, cardiology, rehabilitation, pharmacy, and nursing education to optimize outcomes.
- Promotes effective interdisciplinary communication and coordinated care.
Systems Leadership & Quality
- Leads quality improvement and patient safety initiatives aligned with Magnet, Joint Commission, and stroke standards.
- Uses data and outcomes to drive practice change and improve care delivery.
- Supports a healthy work environment through role modeling and clinical leadership.
Education, Coaching & Mentorship
- Educates patients and families on stroke prevention, seizure safety, medications, and recovery.
- Mentors and coaches nursing staff and students to strengthen clinical competence and professional growth.
- Partners with Nursing Education to support ongoing staff development.
Evidence-Based Practice & Research
- Integrates research and evidence-based practice into clinical care.
- Participates in or leads practice improvement and evidence-based initiatives.
Ethics & Advocacy
- Promotes ethical, patient-centered care and professional accountability.
- Advocates for patients, families, and nursing practice.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Nursing, or current enrollment in an MSN program.
- Current Registered Professional Nurse license in New York State.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of recent clinical experience in stroke, neurology, medical-surgical, or telemetry nursing.
Preferred Qualifications
- NIHSS certification.
- Specialty certification (e.g., neuroscience, stroke, or medical-surgical nursing).
- Experience in a Magnet-designated or journey to Magnet organization.
- Doctoral degree in Nursing (DNP, PhD, or EdD).
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Inpatient setting with frequent interaction with patients and staff; prolonged standing and walking; ability to assist with patient mobility and transfers as needed.

Pay Range:
USD $130,000.00 - USD $140,000.00 /Yr.
