Responsibilities
- Counsel and educate existing patients on FDA-mandated REMS medications, including reading required statements verbatim to patients as part of the REMS program.
- Ensure patients and their caregivers understand their current therapy, including indications, dosing, and key safety information.
- Promote and support medication adherence by reinforcing treatment plans, addressing barriers, and monitoring ongoing compliance.
- Schedule medication refill deliveries and coordinate collection of copays, when applicable, to support uninterrupted therapy.
- Adhere to contracted and accrediting regulations as specified by individual drug requirements and REMS program guidelines.
- Complete thorough, accurate, and timely documentation using good documentation practices in accordance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Discuss potential and current side effects with patients to educate them about treatment alternatives and support informed decision-making.
- Facilitate ongoing therapy adherence by addressing patient concerns, reinforcing education, and serving as a clinical resource.
- Identify and report adverse events (AEs) and product complaints (PCs) to the manufacturer, FDA, and other governing authorities as required.
- Verify specialty drugs and provide patient education on their appropriate use, safety considerations, and monitoring requirements.
- Serve as a conduit between providers and patients to support therapeutic longevity and continuity of care.
- Maintain accurate patient demographic information, medical history, and clinical records in compliance with federal HIPAA standards.
- Collaborate with Pharmacy Support teams to ensure timely and accurate delivery of specialty medications.
- Use computer systems for data entry, documentation, email communication, and web-based applications related to patient care and program requirements.
- Demonstrate professional phone etiquette when communicating with patients, caregivers, providers, and internal teams.
- Apply attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills to manage complex patient cases and ensure adherence to REMS and regulatory requirements.
Essential Skills
- Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in a compact state or primary licensure in North Carolina.
- Ability to obtain nursing licensure in all states and United States territories serviced within approximately 3 months of employment through supported licensing programs, subject to application guidelines.
- Associate, Bachelor, or higher degree in Nursing, or graduation from an accredited nursing diploma program.
- 5 or more years of nursing experience, with at least 1 year of inpatient or outpatient care experience preferred.
- Experience or familiarity with oncology or oncology nursing in inpatient and/or outpatient settings.
- Knowledge of Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) programs and their role in safe medication use.
- Strong attention to detail, particularly in documentation, regulatory compliance, and medication safety processes.
- Proficiency with computer skills, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, and web-based programs.
- Ability to perform accurate computer data entry and maintain organized electronic records.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly educate patients and caregivers.
- Experience with or openness to using motivational interviewing techniques to support behavior change and adherence.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret practice standards, professional journals, and technical procedures.
- Professional phone etiquette and the ability to manage patient and provider calls with empathy and clarity.
- Capability to identify, document, and report adverse events and product complaints according to regulatory requirements.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Background or experience in oncology nursing across inpatient or outpatient care environments.
- Familiarity with specialty pharmacy operations and specialty drug verification processes.
- Experience working with REMS programs or other medication safety and risk mitigation initiatives.
- Comfort working with accrediting and regulatory standards related to specialty medications and REMS requirements.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Self-motivated, with a strong commitment to providing a high level of patient care and education.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, including pharmacy support staff and healthcare providers.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize responsibilities, and meet performance metrics.
- Experience supporting patients with complex therapies, including counseling on side effects and treatment alternatives.
- Comfort working in a partially remote, metrics-driven environment while maintaining high-quality patient interactions.
