POSITION SUMMARY Reports To: Practice Manager Summary: Perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, FMLA, Prior Authorizations, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding for insurance purposes. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, and administering medications as directed by a physician. Work Schedule: Must be able to work non-standard work hours. SKILLS ABILITIES Education Must be a graduate of an accredited medical assisting or nursing school. Experience Six months to one year related experience Computer Skills Proficient in Microsoft Office, email and basic computer skills for other software used throughout the hospital for your area of responsibility. Must exhibit basic computer knowledge Certificates Licenses Certified medical assistant preferred, or a nurse registered in the State of Indiana. Other Requirements It may take up to 6 months to become proficient in this position. This position requires constant standing and walking, frequent sitting, the ability to constantly use your hands and fingers, the ability to occasionally reach above the shoulder and frequently bend. Position requires the ability to lift/carry 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds, as well as frequently push/pull up to 25 pounds. Essential Functions Interview patients to obtain medical information. This includes obtaining all vital signs, medical history and information such as test results in medical records. Prepare them for the physician. Administer injections, aerosol treatments, oral medications, EKGs. Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician. Collect blood, tissue or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, place orders and prepare specimens for testing. Retrieve results and prepare lab reports for provider review. Must have no more than 3 errors (in a 12-month period) with relation to specimen collection. Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets and physicians instructions to patients. Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat, clean and stocked. Clean instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies. Contact medical facilities or departments to schedule patients for tests or admission. Perform general office duties such as answering telephones, taking dictation or completing insurance forms. Notify the appropriate party of any inventory (office supplies, lab or purchased pharmaceutical needs). Notify suppliers when drug samples are needed. Keep an accurate record of medical samples inventory. Dispose of expired drugs. Perform CLIA waived tests (all POC approved testing). Workload messages, faxes, medication refills and test results are addressed daily. Prior Authorizations and FMLA as appropriate. Other tasks as assigned by the provider or practice manager.
