The clinical laboratory technician performs both automated and manual testing on serum and spinal fluid to aid in the diagnosis of autoimmune disorders affecting the brain, nerves, and muscles, many of which may be initially mistaken for other neurological conditions. Using multiple testing methodologies and diverse instrumentation, this position plays a key role in delivering accurate, high-quality results in a rapidly growing, innovation-driven laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical autoimmune serology testing on serum and spinal fluid to support the diagnosis of autoimmune disorders of the brain, nerve, and muscle.
  • Detect serum autoantibodies specific for neurons, glial cells, and muscle using tissue and transfected cell-based fluorescence microscopy, radioimmunoassays, flow cytometry, western blot, ELISA, and chemiluminescence assays.
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain laboratory instrumentation used for automated and manual testing, ensuring accurate and reliable performance.
  • Troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment to resolve technical issues and minimize testing delays.
  • Apply principles of chemistry and biology to perform medical laboratory testing according to established protocols and quality standards.
  • Process and handle specimens appropriately, including receipt, labeling, preparation, and storage, to maintain sample integrity.
  • Follow standard operating procedures and laboratory guidelines to ensure high-quality test results and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in the implementation and use of laboratory automation lines designed to improve testing efficiency and workflow.
  • Document test procedures, results, and quality control data accurately in laboratory systems and records.
  • Collaborate with laboratory technologists, technicians, and other healthcare professionals to support timely and accurate patient testing.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance laboratory processes and efficiency.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor"s degree in chemistry or a human biological science such as Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Animal Science, Marine Biology, Neuroscience, or a closely related field.
  • Strong foundational knowledge in chemistry and biology applicable to medical laboratory testing.
  • Hands-on experience or academic training in medical laboratory testing techniques.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation used in clinical testing.
  • Understanding of specimen processing principles, including handling, preparation, and storage.
  • Ability to follow detailed laboratory protocols and standard operating procedures accurately.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing precise, reliable test results.
  • Effective communication skills to work collaboratively within a laboratory team.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Master"s degree in a relevant field is acceptable and considered an asset.
  • Healthcare background or prior experience in a clinical or medical laboratory setting is preferred.
  • Eligibility for employment under OPT is acceptable.
  • Familiarity with techniques such as fluorescence microscopy, radioimmunoassays, flow cytometry, western blot, ELISA, and chemiluminescence assays is beneficial.
  • Experience with laboratory automation or interest in working with automated testing lines is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to new technologies and evolving laboratory processes.
