Job Summary
The Clinical Coordinator for the Nursing Program is responsible for, but not limited to, facilitating orientation of clinical preceptors, serving as the primary point of contact between the clinical affiliates and the nursing program, making required visits to designated clinical sites, and assisting nursing faculty course teams in scheduling students for clinical/simulation laboratory assignments to ensure educationally sound experiences. The Clinical Coordinator is also responsible for teaching designated nursing courses. This position works under the direction of the Director of Nursing.
Duties/Responsibilities
- In addition to nursing faculty duties and responsibilities, the Clinical Coordinator for nursing shall perform the following duties and responsibilities.
- Facilitate faculty, staff, and student orientation to facilities
- Provide required documentation to clinical facilities
- Collaborate with the Nursing Program Director on student, faculty, and laboratory schedules
- Recommend budget items required to implement laboratory and clinical instruction
- Recommends simulation and laboratory policies
- Promote a laboratory and clinical teaching environment conducive to the teaching/learning process
- Participate in development and implementation of the curriculum
- Participate in faculty meetings, faculty development, recruitment initiatives, and committees necessary to further development and growth of the nursing program
- Maintain knowledge of the nurse educator and nursing students roles according to the Texas Board of Nursing
- Treat students with dignity, respect, and provide timely responses to student inquiry
- Maintain an ongoing relationship with the community and affiliate agencies to promote responsiveness to community needs
- Recommend policies to maintain safety laboratory and clinical settings
- Promotes innovative simulation and clinical instruction which follow syllabus guidelines
- Promotes best practices for teaching and evaluating clinical reasoning and judgement in laboratories and in the clinical setting
- Demonstrates sensitivity to individual student needs and facilitates reasonable accommodations according to policy
- Supervises Simulation Specialist and Clinical Teaching Assistant
- Assists Program Director for Nursing with required reporting
- Develop a regular schedule for visiting clinical affiliate sites and obtain evaluation data (clinical agency evaluation of clinical rotation experience)
- Counsel and advise students as needed and in accordance with LIT, Department of Healthcare & Sciences, and Nursing Program policy
- Analyzes faculty teaching and provides input to student performance evaluation and makes necessary recommendations in accordance with regulatory agencies and nursing program guidelines
- Be available for students/clinic educators during all clinical hours
- Maintain current knowledge of program policies, procedures, and student progress
- Utilize and promote teamwork strategies and competencies
- Work cooperatively with the Program Director and clinical preceptors to complete and update clinical evaluation tools, handbooks, and clinical curriculum
- Oversee completion of clinical education documents including records of student performance and competency procedures
- Participate in the programmatic/college accreditation process and all necessary assessment processes
- Participate in recruitment and retention efforts
- Process good verbal and written communication skills
- Promote timely completion of evaluation and documentation of student performance as required, and in compliance with college, state, CoARC, and SACSCOC standards
Minimum/Preferred Qualifications
Minimum Education/Qualifications:
- Current license or privilege to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Texas
- Master's degree in nursing
- A nurse faculty holding a master's degree or doctorate degree in a discipline other than nursing shall hold a bachelor's degree in nursing from an approved or accredited baccalaureate program in nursing and shall have at least six (6) graduate semester hours in nursing appropriate to assigned teaching responsibilities
- Three (3) years' experience in nursing
- Effective teaching and communication abilities required for a professional nursing education program
- Work within the mission, vision, goals, and philosophical framework of LIT and the nursing program
- Effective collaboration with the Nursing Program Association, Department of Healthcare and Sciences as well as the governing organization and associated committees
- Verbal and written professional communication and teamwork skills
- Student-oriented focus with attention to student success initiatives
- Maintain expertise, knowledge, and safety necessary to teach assigned curriculum content
- Knowledge of Texas Board of Nursing rules for nursing practice and nursing programs
- Knowledge of best practices for teaching and learning in nursing, including simulation
Preferred Education/Qualifications:
- Masters or Doctoral degree in nursing
- Three (3) years' experience in nursing education
- Certified Nurse Educator
- Certified Healthcare Simulator Educator
