TEACHER OF THE HEARING IMPAIRED (PART-TIME)
SPECILAIZED LEARNING AND STUDENT SERVICES
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Special Education Teacher of the Hearing Impaired will provide IEP mandated instruction to students in a highly structured and supported classroom environment. The Special Education Teacher must have the ability to develop and implement instructional and behavioral management strategies for special needs students. The teacher must also have an understanding of development and implementation of individualized education plans, an ability to administer and interpret a variety of academic and related assessment instruments pertaining to special education. Communication with other colleagues from various disciplines and with parents are essential to student success. Applicants for the position of special education shall be considered on the basis of qualifications.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The teacher of the hearing impaired will:
- Participate in planning and placement team meetings for all hearing impaired students
- Develop and maintain IEP for all hearing impaired students
- Read and interpret audiograms and technical reports on hearing loss for educational purposes
- Evaluate students and write progress reports for all hearing impaired students as directed by their IEP
- Provide technical consultation to staff and parents with regard to hearing impaired students
- Provide information to school staff as to the strengths and needs of students and help develop accommodations and modifications
- Coordinate and direct services of sign language interpreters and instructional assistants as needed
- Recommend appropriate amplification systems and other assistive technology for deaf and hearing impaired students
- Ensure the functioning of students amplification systems
- Keep current with laws and regulations regarding deaf and hearing impaired students
- Keep current with best teaching practice for deaf and hearing impaired students
- Work collegially with parents and staff to ensure high levels of achievement for all hearing impaired students
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- Public school experience with students displaying social/emotional/behavioral needs
- Experience in behavior management (development and program implementation)
- Collaborative working style
- Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
- Effective, active listening skills
- Ability to work effectively with others
- Organizational and problem solving skills
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- CT certification as a Teacher of the Hearing Impaired (057)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Fluency in American Sign Language
- Experience as a teacher of the hearing impaired
- Valid Connecticut Drivers License
- IEP data collection knowledge
- Working knowledge of IEP Direct
- Elementary school special education experience preferred
- Current Physical Management Training (PMT) or Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training
- Fluency in Spanish is an asset
- Experience working with students with cochlear implants
Days: Monday - Friday
