POSITION: Special Education/Structured Literacy Teacher (Grades 7-8)
START DATE: August 2026
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Shared Services is seeking a certified special education/structured literacy teacher to work at Northwestern Regional Middle School in the Special Education Department who is committed to classroom leadership, social-emotional learning and instructional excellence, particularly in the area of Structured Literacy.
- Required: CT Special Education Certification (065, 165, or 265)
- Preferred: CT Special Education Certification (065, 165, or 265) with dual certification in reading (102)
- Required: Knowledge of best practices and application in literacy/reading for students with dyslexia/learning disabilities
- Preferred: Knowledge of and training in Orton-Gillingham and/or Wilson Reading
- Knowledge of best practices working with students with exceptionalities (including but not limited to): Emotional Disability (ED), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Executive Functioning Deficits
- Recognition and practice to implement social-emotional learning strategies
- Excellent teaming, collaboration and communication skills with special education staff, related service providers, regular education teachers, administrative team and parents
- Experience and knowledge regarding differentiated instruction and inclusive educational practices
- Experience and knowledge as an active participant in the RTI/SRBI process
- Ability to provide academic support to wide range of students
- Knowledge of IDEA and the PPT process
- Develop and evaluate measurable IEP goals and objectives
- Evaluate students as needed using standard based and curriculum based measures
- Evaluate students as needed using individualized standard measures (i.e., Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement, Woodcock Johnson Test of Achievement, Wechsler Individual Achievement test, and other various reading focused measures)
- Oversee instructional assistants relative to students on caseload
- Ability to establish and maintain excellent relationships with students and families
- Other duties as assigned by Principal and Special Education Supervisor
