Job Description:

Position Summary:

Marlborough Elementary School is seeking a passionate, collaborative, and student-centered Literacy Specialist to support students in developing strong literacy skills and a lifelong love of reading. This full-time position involves providing targeted intervention and enrichment services, collaborating with classroom teachers to strengthen core literacy instruction, and supporting the implementation of evidence-based reading practices aligned with the Science of Reading. The candidate will work closely with students, teachers, administrators, related service providers, and families to identify student needs, analyze assessment data, and develop instructional plans that promote literacy growth and achievement. The Literacy Specialist will serve as a literacy leader within the school by coaching and co-teaching with teachers, facilitating professional learning, and contributing to the continuous improvement of the schools literacy programs and practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide targeted literacy intervention and enrichment services and actively contribute to the MTSS, and data team processes to identify students in need of support. Intervention instruction is based on individual student needs which address critical components of reading, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • Assess students formally and informally to monitor progress, analyze data, and make instructional adjustments to maximize student growth.
  • Establish and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with students and families while maintaining confidentiality. Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, intervention goals, strategies for support, and next steps.
  • Collaborate proactively with teachers, specialists, support staff, and administration to support student achievement. Participate in grade-level meetings, MTSS meetings, and PPTs.
  • Co-teach and coach teachers to support the implementation of evidence-based literacy practices aligned with the Science of Reading. Model instructional strategies, provide feedback, and collaborate on planning and problem-solving to strengthen Tier I instruction.
  • Apply current research, trends, and best practices in literacy and the Science of Reading to support instructional decision-making, professional learning, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Assist with the planning, delivery, and evaluation of professional development related to literacy instruction, assessment, and intervention.
  • Contribute to decisions regarding the schools core and tiered literacy programs, including the selection and implementation of instructional materials, interventions, assessment methodologies and budget.
  • Other duties as assigned by administration

Qualifications:

  • Must have an advanced degree in literacy; Valid Connecticut certification as a Reading and Language Arts Consultant (#102) required; in addition, 097 preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years experience working with elementary grades students; Interventionist/Coach experience preferred and at least three served as a reading/literacy teacher.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based literacy instruction and intervention practices aligned with the Science of Reading.
  • Experience administering, analyzing, and using literacy assessment data to inform instruction and intervention decisions.
  • Strong understanding of the components of reading, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • Experience providing targeted reading intervention and enrichment services to students with diverse learning needs.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Experience coaching, co-teaching, and collaborating with classroom teachers to strengthen literacy instruction and student outcomes preferred.
  • Ability to analyze data, problem-solve, and contribute effectively to MTSS and school improvement processes.
  • Experience planning and facilitating professional learning opportunities for staff is preferred.
  • Commitment to literacy growth and achievement for all learners in an inclusive learning environment.
