POSITION: Language Arts Consultant/Remedial Reading Specialist

LOCATION OF ASSIGNMENT: East Hampton Middle School (6-8)

ANTICIPATED STARTING DATE: August 2026

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

The Reading Language Arts Consultant/Remedial Reading Language Arts Specialist supports students, teachers, paraprofessionals/tutors and administrators by providing leadership, instructional coaching, expertise and instruction to improve literacy achievement for all students in all content areas.

Specific duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  1. Identify students in need of academic assistance, diagnose and analyze their needs, and prescribe an appropriate program of intervention.

  2. Administer formal and informal assessments to identify specific student skill deficits and strengths.

  3. Assist administration and teachers in analyzing student assessment data from district and state assessments.

  4. Assist in the ongoing improvement of the district-wide language arts philosophy/curriculum and its interpretation to the school administration, staff and public.

  5. Provide coaching and model effective instructional strategies in classrooms across all content areas.

  6. Provide instructional intervention for Tier 2 and Tier 3 students as part of the district's MTSS process.

  7. Create materials and demonstration lessons to strengthen the use of research-based best practices and language arts instructional interventions in the classroom.

  8. Collaborate with classroom teachers to determine the instructional levels of students, and appropriate instructional materials and grouping for instruction.

  9. Serve as a facilitator for the school's MTSS/data team process and participate in the planning and placement team process as needed.

  10. Identify technology appropriate for Language Arts instruction.

  11. Collaborate with the professional staff to ensure continuity between regular education programs and special areas/programs such as ML and special education.

  12. Oversee the work of paraprofessionals/tutors to ensure that students are receiving appropriate language arts instruction and interventions.

  13. Plan and deliver professional learning to support literacy initiatives.

  14. Perform other related responsibilities that support improving literacy achievement in the school and district.

  15. Collaborate with the administrative team in strategic planning, allocation of resources, and development of school-wide initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Connecticut Certification as a Reading and Language Arts Consultant (097) preferred and/or Reading and Remedial Language Arts Certificate (102). Intermediate Administration or Supervision (092) preferred.
  • Demonstrated competence as a master classroom teacher.
  • In depth knowledge of literacy skill acquisition, gradual release model, and developmental reading processes.
  • Thorough knowledge of Connecticut Core Standards for English Language Arts/Literacy, curriculum development and design, and student assessment techniques.
  • Personal and professional qualities of an effective teacher.
