Job Description:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

The Research and Media Literacy Teacher empowers middle school students to become critical thinkers, discerning consumers of information, and responsible digital citizens. Through explicit instruction and guided inquiry, this educator develops research and media literacy skills across grades 6, 7, and 8. The position also leads the 8th Grade Quest program-a research-based passion project that culminates in a presentation demonstrating each students growth and learning. This work directly supports the Berlin Public Schools Vision of the Graduate, fostering students who are resilient, informed, and ready to thrive in a dynamic world.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and deliver engaging lessons in research methods, source evaluation, citation, and academic integrity.
  • Teach media literacy concepts, including identifying bias, evaluating credibility, and analyzing digital media.
  • Integrate lessons on digital citizenship, online safety, and ethical technology use.
  • Collaborate with the Library Media Specialist and Technology Integration Specialist to help guide 8th Grade Quest students through all phases of an independent research-based project, culminating in a formal presentation.
  • Create developmentally appropriate learning experiences aligned with curriculum goals and district standards.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet varied student learning needs and foster curiosity, creativity, and ownership of learning.
  • Assess student progress through formative and summative measures; provide meaningful feedback to encourage continuous improvement.
  • Model best practices in information literacy, digital ethics, and evidence-based reasoning.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Connecticut Teacher Certification in English, Grades 7-12 (015) OR English, Middle School, Grades 4-8 (215) OR School Library Media Specialist (062)
  • Bachelors degree from a regionally accredited institution; Masters degree preferred.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree in English, Education, Library Science, or related field
  • Experience teaching research skills, media literacy, or information literacy at the middle school level
  • Familiarity with AASL Standards, Connecticut Core Standards, and digital citizenship frameworks
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research instruction, media literacy, and digital citizenship.
  • Commitment to fostering inquiry, independent learning, and alignment with the Berlin Public Schools Vision of the Graduate.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Full-time (10-month) teaching assignment to begin at the start of the 2026-2027 school year. Salary and benefits in accordance with the negotiated agreement between the Berlin Board of Education and the Berlin Education Association, BA Step 1 $54,797.00 - Ph.D. Max $114,617.00.
