Job Description:

First Grade Teacher

St. Ann Academy, Bridgeport, CT

Position Summary:

The First Grade Teacher reports to the Principal and is responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and supportive learning environment that promotes the academic, social, emotional, and spiritual growth of each student. The teacher plans and delivers high-quality instruction aligned with school curriculum and standards while fostering a love of learning and building strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues.

Responsibilities:

Instruction and Curriculum

  • Plan and implement engaging lessons in reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and religion (if applicable).
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of all students.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, technology, and hands-on learning experiences.
  • Monitor student progress through formal and informal assessments and use data to guide instruction.
  • Maintain accurate records of student achievement and provide timely feedback.

Classroom Environment

  • Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and well-managed classroom environment.
  • Teach and reinforce appropriate social skills, routines, and expectations.
  • Foster a classroom culture that promotes curiosity, collaboration, and responsibility.
  • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all students.

Student Support

  • Identify students requiring academic or behavioral interventions and collaborate with support staff to develop appropriate plans.
  • Communicate student progress and concerns with families in a timely and professional manner.
  • Encourage the development of each childs confidence, independence, and character.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with grade-level teachers, specialists, and administration to improve instructional practices.
  • Attend faculty meetings, professional development sessions, and school events.
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional and ethical standards.
  • Fulfill assigned supervisory duties, including recess, lunch, arrival, dismissal, or other responsibilities as assigned.

School Community

  • Build positive partnerships with parents and guardians through regular communication.
  • Participate in school-wide initiatives, committees, and community events.
  • Support the mission, philosophy, and values of the school.
  • Contribute positively to a collaborative and faith-filled school culture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Elementary Education or a related field.
  • Valid state teaching certification in Elementary Education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of early childhood development and best instructional practices.
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, families, and administrators.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional growth.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous elementary teaching experience.
  • Experience with standards-based instruction and assessment.
  • Knowledge of educational technology and digital learning tools.
  • Practicing Catholic willing to support the mission of a Catholic school (for Catholic schools).

Work Environment

The First Grade Teacher works in a classroom and school environment that requires frequent interaction with students, staff, and families. The position follows the school calendar and may require attendance at evening events, conferences, and professional development activities outside the regular school day.
