POSITION SUMMARY:

The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA is hiring a Classroom Teacher Assistant for our child care program. Assist with daily activities for children enrolled in the program and providing a quality experience that focuses on the YMCA values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring. Morning and afternoon hours available starting in August.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists in activities planned by the lead or classroom teacher.
  • Assist in developing self-confidence, self-control, listening skills, ability to follow directions and work habits
  • Assists with set-up and clean-up of activities (lunch, snack, projects, etc.)
  • Ensure a safe, positive, nurturing environment and continually and actively involve self with children
  • Comply with YMCA and government regulations regarding the care of children
  • Maintain positive relationships and effective communication with parents creating a positive connection with existing families and perspective students/families.
  • Informs Lead Teacher and/or Director of any concerns regarding children, parents and/or staff
  • Present a friendly interest in each individual and his/her activities
  • Maintains overall cleanliness and care of equipment and facility each day
  • Treat all children with dignity and respect
  • Will adhere to all child abuse prevention policies.
  • Attends and participates in program activities, special events, staff meetings, and staff training.
  • Remain in assigned classroom or area. Never leave a child unattended.
  • Arranges for a substitute when absent from class.
  • Accountable for understanding the organization's charitable status and mission to assure access for all through active participation in fundraising and philanthropy efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum age 16.
  • Minimum of six months of basic experience working with children preferred
  • Requirements upon date of hire include: completion of Child Abuse Prevention trainings; CPR; First Aid; AED

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to safely supervise children's activities.
  • Other physical functions of this position require walking, standing, pushing, pulling, carrying, hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, balancing, reaching, handling, use of fingers, feeling and seeing.
