A Classroom-Based Consultant (CBC) is a student employee with The Learning Commons who supports both students and instructors in a University Writing Program (UWP) course throughout the semester. CBCs use a relational, peer-to-peer approach to mentoring and collaborative learning. By attending each class, they work closely with the instructor to clarify course content and writing assignments, while also building supportive relationships with students. - Adjust tone and approach based on audience (e.g., peers vs. supervisors).
- Analyze problems and propose practical solutions.
- Offer help to peers or new team members when appropriate.
- Follow instructions, meet deadlines, and deliver quality work.
- Build positive working relationships across campus departments.
Essential Functions
- Build relationships with students by establishing a peer-to-peer connection, fostering a welcoming environment, and engaging students proactively to encourage participation.
- Support the development of student writing and confidence by serving as a sympathetic reader, guiding writers through the writing process, and helping them recognize areas of strength and those for improvement while promoting revision and self-editing skills.
- Act as a writing resource by sharing strategies, modeling effective practices, and offering mini lessons on specific writing skills or processes.
- Promote learning and engagement by assisting students with understanding assignments, clarifying expectations, setting learning goals, and facilitating individual or group discussions.
- Model positive academic behaviors by demonstrating professionalism, punctuality, active classroom engagement, and effective study techniques such as note-taking, time management, and discussion skills.
- Serve as a mediator between students and instructors by clarifying assignment expectations, communicating feedback, and collaborating with faculty to identify trends and support classroom learning.
- Assist students in adjusting to college by sharing insights about university culture and expectations, discussing the rigor of coursework, and referring students to appropriate academic and campus resources.
- Connect students with The Learning Commons by explaining available services, encouraging frequent use of the Writing Hub, and making referrals to Academic Coaching, Subject Tutoring, and Math Tutoring.
