Position Summary

The Civil Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for civil construction projects including site development, roadway, utilities, concrete, asphalt, drainage, and infrastructure work. This position analyzes plans, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to determine labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor costs while supporting the bidding and project management process.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review project plans, specifications, and bid documents.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs for earthwork, utilities, paving, concrete, grading, and related civil construction items.
  • Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates, bid proposals, and project budgets.
  • Analyze labor, equipment, and production costs.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits when required.
  • Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, vendors, and clients.
  • Maintain estimating databases and historical cost records.
  • Assist with contract review and scope clarification.
  • Ensure bids are submitted accurately and on time.
  • Identify value engineering and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Track awarded projects and compare estimated versus actual costs.

Qualifications

  • Experience in civil construction estimating preferred.
  • Knowledge of civil construction methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Strong math, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and estimating software.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills.
  • Ability to work under deadlines and manage multiple bids simultaneously

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with DOT or heavy civil projects.
  • Familiarity with estimating software such as HCSS HeavyBid, Bluebeam, Agtek, or Bid2Win.
  • Understanding of subcontractor procurement and project scheduling.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and use a computer for extended periods.
  • Ability to occasionally visit active construction sites and navigate uneven terrain.


Work Environment

  • Office-based with occasional field visits to project sites.
  • May require extended hours during bid deadlines.
