The City of Porterdale, Georgia, is seeking a dynamic, visionary, and experienced professional to serve as its next City Manager.

Porterdale is a historic mill town of approximately 1,800 residents located in fast-growing Newton County, just 30 minutes east of Atlanta and adjacent to the City of Covington. Situated along the scenic Yellow River, Porterdale offers a distinctive sense of place and community character. The town remains one of the most intact early 20th-century Southern mill villages in the region, with much of its layout, housing exteriors, and downtown preserved since the 1930s. With limited exceptions, the entire town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Operating under a council-manager form of government since 2004, Porterdale is well-positioned for thoughtful growth, revitalization, and continued preservation of its unique heritage.

Position Overview

The City Manager serves as the chief administrative officer of the city and provides leadership, management, and direction for all municipal operations.

This position requires a highly skilled leader who can balance preservation of the City's historic character with strategic growth and operational excellence. The City Manager works closely with the Mayor and City Council to implement policies, achieve community goals, and deliver high-quality services to residents.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct and oversee all municipal departments and operations
  • Develop and administer the City's $4,700,000 annual operating and capital budgets
  • Lead implementation of strategic plans, goals, and policy initiatives
  • Advise the Mayor and City Council on financial, operational, and policy matters
  • Foster economic development and community revitalization efforts
  • Build strong relationships with residents, businesses, and regional partners
  • Ensure transparency, accountability, and effective communication
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness and crisis response efforts

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Progressive leadership experience in municipal or county government

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field

Experience as a City/County Manager or Assistant Manager

Strong background in budgeting, capital planning, and financial management

Demonstrated success in economic development and redevelopment initiatives

Experience working with elected officials and community stakeholders

Compensation & Appointment

This is an at-will, FLSA-exempt position appointed by the City Council.

Starting salary: $80,000 (negotiable based on qualifications and experience)
