Job Summary and Qualifications

What you will do in this role:

  • You will plan and provide therapeutic intervention and appropriate psychosocial/developmental care under general supervision and direction of the Child Life Coordinator for pediatric/adolescent patients.
  • You will will assist families in effectively coping with the stress and anxiety of health care experiences as well to maximize growth and development of children and adolescents in the hospital setting.
  • You will assess patients and facilitate play interactions with regard to developmental level, interest, capabilities, special concerns, life situations, and stress vulnerability potential related to illness, injury and health care.
  • You will formulate and revise child life patient care plans to develop appropriate strategies for child life care in conjunction with other health team members. 
  • You will provide therapeutic child life care for patients/families based upon the needs of the assessment and patient care plan - this includes medical play activities, psychosocial preparation, teaching effective coping behaviors, and staying with children through procedures to help implement effective coping mechanisms.
  • You will provide supportive relationships, emotional support, information and role modeling to patients and family member to foster appropriate interaction with children in a hospital setting.
  • You will develop, implement, and evaluate child life plans and programs to encourage optimum growth, development and self esteem of children and adolescents, and facilitate functional family interactions.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Child Life or a related field such as Child Development, Child Psychology, Education, or Counseling
  • Must possess Child Life Specialist certification within one year of hire
  • BLS required within 30 days of hire
  • 1 year of related experience or a Child Life Internship preferred
  • Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills required
