Description The City of Norfolks Department of Utilities is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Chief Waterworks Operator. This person oversees the operation of a shift at one of two water treatment plants and associated transmission systems. Monitors the quality of water, plans changes in water flows, maintains facilities, and directs work assignments of staff.

Essential Functions

  • Monitors the quality of water by performing chemical and physical analysis of water, performing inspections on water treatment equipment, and making adjustments as needed.
  • Maintains the proper raw water flows.
  • Calculates chemical machine settings, makes changes to machine settings, and adjusts pumpage of various flows.
  • Attends meetings, conducts employee evaluations, and resolves issues.
  • Operates monitors and performs maintenance on equipment and facilities by documenting operations, performing calculations, reporting equipment problems to maintenance, and assisting with minor maintenance and repairs.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, and technical or correspondence schools are likely sources.

Two (2) years experience as a Class I Operator.

  • Work Hours: 3 days on 3 days off; 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. (hours subject to change)
  • Work Location: 6040 Waterworks Road, Norfolk, Virginia 23502 as needed; You may be required to work at 3719 Parker Avenue, Norfolk, Virginia 23508
  • This position is designated as an Essential position and you may be required to work extended, rotating, on call, nights, weekends, and/or holidays in response to emergencies or severe weather.

Retirement

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant's school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
