Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

The Division of information Technology Services (ITS) at UNCG has broad responsibilities in determining the strategic direction for information technology deployment and use throughout the campus.

Position Summary

The mission of ITS is to leverage expert staff and partnerships to provide sustainable technology services that are reliable, easy-to-use, and effective; and advance university strategic initiatives and regional growth with technological acuity and readiness.

The Director for Institutional Research and Enterprise Data Management provides sound leadership for a comprehensive institutional research and enterprise data management program to support the university's mission, priorities, and associated initiatives.

Inspiring campus-wide confidence in the professional staff and work products of the IREDM Office, the Director is a dynamic and engaged leader who proactively plans and manages staff assignments, actively participates in individual and group meetings to present findings and/or understand campus needs and maintains full accountability for the quality and timeliness of all reports and projects.

The Director serves in a cooperative and engaging role with team members to deliver to university leadership analytics that are both predictive and prescriptive, reporting and visualizations that allow for data-informed decision making, and oversees a comprehensive data governance program.

The Director reports to the Vice Chancellor for Information Technology Services and Chief Information Officer and interacts regularly with the Provost, members of the Executive Steering Committee as well as deans and department heads and serves as a liaison to the UNC System Office and other external organizations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Mid-to late-career with Masters and 2-4 yrs experience or

Bachelors and 3-5 yrs experience or Equivalent combination of education/experience

Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in a Social Science discipline, Educational Research, Business, or a closely related field.
  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in Institutional Research in higher education or a similarly complex setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a team of research and data administration professionals.

Strategize, plan, and guide efforts to build a robust program in support of the office's three areas of focus - Data Science & Analytics, Reporting, Visualization, & Training, and Data Management.

Essential Tasks

  • Launch and maintain Data Central (the online repository for all official university data reports and dashboards).
  • Develop and operationalize process workflow for request and review of new reports and dashboards and develop institutional standards for unit data analysts to leverage institutional data and publish to data central.
  • Lead enterprise-wide efforts to consolidate data visualization and reporting platforms based on well-understood end user business needs (what are they actually trying to accomplish versus how they have always done it) for both managerial and operational reporting.
  • Effectively balance fulfillment of immediate unit data reporting and visualization needs while advancing the goals of the long-term data strategy.
  • Implement and manage a robust and comprehensive university data governance program.
  • Build trust and confidence among data users in the university community by improving communication and serving in a consultative capacity regarding data literacy and accuracy.

Attract, develop, manage and retain the talent required to operate a high-performance institutional research and enterprise data management program that effectively supports the university's mission, priorities, and associated initiatives.

  • Build a persistent organizational focus on improving customer value.
  • Operationalize a sustained program of continuous improvement that requires employees at all levels to think about their work in the context of larger university strategic goals.
  • Actively coach and mentor staff to ensure that every team member understands the strategic goals of the University, the strategic goals of ITS, and their individual role in achieving success.
  • Promote/encourage professional development opportunities to increase staff skills.
  • Leverage industry and peer data to define standardized skill sets, roles, classifications and compensation ranges for ITS positions that are clearly tied to the 5 Year ITS Technology Strategy and ITS Service Portfolio.
  • Identify professional growth opportunities and develop training plans for staff that advance ITS talent management goals and align resource capabilities with ITS strategic goals.
  • Set clear performance expectations to ensure that staff understand how to succeed.
  • Trust your team to execute your vision.
  • Provide honest and timely feedback and hold your team accountable when they don't meet your expectations.

Provide strategic thought leadership for institutional business intelligence.

Essential Tasks

  • Serve as the liaison to university leadership on all institutional research and enterprise data management issues.
  • Evangelize and support the use of data-driven insights to help our campus clients achieve business outcomes and objectives.
  • Work with stakeholders and subject matter experts to analyze, design and implement solutions utilizing business intelligence technology to present dashboards and analytics at the enterprise level.
  • Design rich data visualizations and interactive tools and solutions to communicate complex ideas to university leadership.
