This posting is for a Temporary Ed Para Language Coach for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) for the 2025-2026 school year. This position is part-time with a flexible schedule based on students needs (~6-8 hours per week or ~30 hours per month).
In-District applicants who are permanent employees and current members of the Teamsters bargaining group should apply by 3 p.m. on June 5, 2026, and will receive first consideration. The rate of pay is based on experience and the Teamsters salary schedule.
Job Summary
The Language Coach - Deaf Services Specialist provides direct support to Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students to foster language development, self-advocacy skills, and positive identity formation. This role focuses on the acquisition of American Sign Language (ASL), access to academic content, and building a strong bilingual-bicultural foundation.
Responsibilities
• Provide individualized or small-group instruction in ASL, Pidgin Signed English (PSE), and Total Communication methods depending on student goals and preferences. • Support students in developing academic vocabulary, classroom terminology, and communication skills relevant to both school and home settings. • Foster self-advocacy skills by teaching students how to request support, navigate classroom environments, and explain their hearing loss and assistive technology to others. • Promote understanding of Deaf identity norms, culture, and communication etiquette. • Use a variety of engaging instructional strategies, including games, hands-on activities, visual aids, themed books, and simple worksheets, to enhance comprehension and retention. • Consult regularly with educational team members, including general and special education teachers, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, school psychologists, and counselors, to assess student needs and support the development of appropriate learning goals. • Collaborate with external partners, including the Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Youth (CDHY), for referrals or recommendations for assistive technology, counseling, or interpreting services. • Collaborate with special education teachers, general education teachers, families, and related service providers to meet the unique needs of students. • Provide families with information about community resources and strategies to support language development at home. • Adapt frequency and duration of sessions based on each students age, attention span, academic goals, and school schedule.
Requirements
• Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) or EIPA or RID scores may be required. • Experience working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals, preferably in an educational setting. • Strong understanding of Deaf culture and the unique educational needs of DHH students. • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams. • Degree or certification in Deaf Education, Communication Disorders, ASL Interpreting, or related field. • Knowledge of assistive listening devices and classroom accommodations for DHH students. • Experience developing individualized language support plans.
Work Environment
This position is temporary and subject to the terms or conditions of the Teamsters Bargaining Unit Agreement. Temporary positions include pro-rated health benefits and sick leave, but do not include paid holidays or personal days.
