Reports to: Associate Dean
Supervises: Department Faculty
Responsibilities include:
Providing principal management and oversight of Longy's graduate program in Jazz and Contemporary Music.
Being on campus (offering regular office hours) during the period of August 20 to June 15.
Overseeing department offerings and events, including courses, concerts, first year recitals, seminars, workshops, admissions panels, etc.
Developing and executing short-term programmatic, artistic, and curricular activities in JCM.
Organizing and teaching department seminars that supplement the student educational experience by teaching how to give/receive feedback in public settings and by emphasizing the importance of diversity in repertoire. While the occasional guest is welcome, the responsibility belongs to the chair.
Managing day-to-day student and faculty issues, including disciplinary matters with the support of the Associate Dean.
Managing and evaluating faculty, assisting with course and performance improvement whenever necessary.
Attending live auditions and coordinating a panel of faculty to adjudicate with the help of Admissions.
Working with the Director of Admissions, assigning admitted students to studio instructors.
Spearheading and implementing recruitment and retention strategies, in collaboration with the Admissions staff.
Academic advising and career coaching of department majors.
Managing monthly department faculty meetings during the academic year.
Serving as a member of the Conservatory Academic Council (CAC) and attending all bi-weekly meetings of the CAC throughout the academic year; working with other academic managers in furthering the mission of Longy.
Attending all full faculty meetings and administrative staff meetings throughout the year, including the summer months.
Managing Graduate Fellows (student workers) as needed.
Managing the department budget.
In accordance with the employee handbook, coordinating all festival, performance, and recruitment travel with your supervisor to ensure all duties are executed properly and in a timely manner.
Additional duties, as assigned by the Associate Dean.
QUALIFICATIONS
Qualified candidates will possess an outstanding record as a musician, artistic curator, and educator.
Advanced degree (MM, MAT, MME or equivalent) in Music and/or Music Education, with a minimum of three years of teaching experience in a collegiate, university, or conservatory setting.
Track record of managerial experience and proven leadership.
Track record of developing curriculum and designing music projects with measurable outcomes.
Strong teaching and facilitation skills, including a thorough understanding of music education principles.
Obvious commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Proven ability to build and leverage relationships with diverse audiences and partners.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to details.
Demonstrated ability to plan strategically, prioritize time, and manage implementation of plans in fast-moving, changeable environments.
Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as needed, as Longy hosts numerous performances.
Compensation
Chair compensation is re-evaluated yearly, prior to the start of the next academic year. Chair compensation is calculated based on department size, which takes into account the number of students, faculty, classes, and the corresponding administrative expectations. Compensation may increase OR decrease year to year based on these variables.
