CFO / Vice President of Finance  - Burgess Memorial Hospital | Onawa, Iowa | On-Site 


Talent Co is retained to fill the CFO / VP of Finance for Burgess Hospital

This role will report directly to the CEO and serves as a core member of a five-person senior leadership team. This is a hands-on, visible leadership position with direct access to the Board Finance Committee and no system-level oversight layers.

The CFO will lead financial operations through a planned retirement transition and will drive optimization of newly implemented systems and workflows, including Epic integration.

A CEO succession pathway exists for the right candidate motivated by long-term organizational leadership (5–6 year horizon). This is not a requirement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all financial operations for a $32M–$35M CAH and rural delivery organization
  • Serve as primary finance voice at the senior leadership table; drive discussion and present solutions
  • Direct cost reporting and CMS reimbursement functions
  • Oversee financial systems optimization post-implementation, including Epic integration
  • Represent the organization externally as requested by the CEO
  • Engage directly with the Board Finance Committee

Required Qualifications

  • 6+ years of experience in healthcare, non-profit, or closely related field
  • Direct experience with cost reporting and CMS reimbursement
  • Demonstrated ability to work in both strategic and operational capacities
  • Experience leading organizations through systems transitions
  • Strong cross-functional communication skills

Strongly Preferred

  • Public accounting background with healthcare focus
  • Prior finance leadership in a smaller or mid-sized hospital setting
  • Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA)

About the Organization

Burgess Memorial Hospital is an independent, locally governed Critical Access Hospital and rural health delivery organization with $32M–$35M in annual revenues. The organization operates two off-site family medicine clinics, home health, hospice, certified community behavioral health services, and an ambulance service.

Burgess is not affiliated with or managed by a large health system. Governance and decision-making are local. A $20M facility renovation and expansion was completed in 2024. Core financial systems have been recently upgraded; Epic go-live is scheduled for September 2025.

This position is one of three Board-appointed officers authorized to legally represent and act on behalf of the organization.
