Director of Finance and Operations

Position Overview

  • Reports To: Superintendent of Schools
  • Work Year: 12-Month, Non-Union
  • Supervises: Business Office Staff, Facilities Supervisor, Technology Director, Food and Nutritional Services Supervisor, and major contracted service vendors.

The Opportunity

The Brookfield Public Schools is seeking a dynamic, Cabinet-level strategic team partner to serve as the next chief financial and operational leader to ensure strict stewardship of public funds while driving a modern, efficient operational infrastructure to maximize educational dividends for all students.

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Financial Leadership & Strategic Planning
  • Budget Development: Plan, coordinate, and direct the development, administration, and public presentation of the districts multi-million-dollar annual operating budget in coordination with the Superintendent and Board of Education.
  • Fiscal Optimization: Drive long-range fiscal modeling, revenue projections, cost-benefit analyses, and corrective actions for budget variances to maintain optimal fiscal health.
  • Grants & Reporting: Supervise financial compliance, tracking, and timely state/federal reporting (e.g., EFS, categorical grants) in collaboration with the Assistant Superintendent.
  • Audit & Internal Controls: Direct a robust program of internal financial controls and coordinate the annual independent financial audit.
  1. Operations & Contract Management
  • Facilities & Security: Direct the districts plant operations and maintenance program through the Facilities Supervisor to ensure clean, safe, and secure learning environments; chair the District Safety Committee.
  • Pupil Transportation: Administer the districts student transportation contracts, optimizing routes, managing special education transit needs, and evaluating vendor performance.
  • Food Services: Direct and manage the operations, financial solvency, and regulatory compliance of the districts outsourced food service vendor.
  • Information Technology: Partner with the Technology Director to guide infrastructure upgrades, hardware/software procurement, data protection, and modern business software solutions.
  1. Capital Planning & Municipal Collaboration
  • Capital Improvement: Design and manage the districts long-range Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) and building project budgets.
  • Town Liaison: Work closely with the Town of Brookfield Finance Director, Board of Selectmen, and Board of Finance to streamline shared services and fiscal projections.
  • Labor Relations: Serve as a core member of the districts collective bargaining team, offering precise financial modeling, salary projections, and benefits analysis for union contract negotiations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certification: Hold or be immediately eligible for the State of Connecticut School Business Administrator (085) certificate; Intermediate Administrator (092) certification is highly preferred.
  • Education: Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required; Masters Degree (MBA/MSA) or CPA preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of successful leadership experience as a school business official or managing complex municipal/district financial operations (MUNIS experience strongly preferred)
  • Salary & Benefits: Competitive. Set contractually by the Brookfield Board of Education
