Nature of Work: The primary objective of this job is to provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and support modalities to patients of all ages, with cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders. This service is provided thru a team of caring professionals, determined to improve quality and safety, by addressing the needs of patients and their families as we put into action our nursing home mission.
Essential Functions:
1. The Respiratory Therapy Technician must be able to demonstrate the ability to work various assignments with minimum supervision.
2. The Respiratory Therapy Technician is expected to perform his / her duties as outlined in the departmental policy and procedure manual.
3. The Respiratory Therapy Technician with years of clinical experience and supervisory assistance could perform the duties of a Registry Eligible Respiratory Therapist.
4. Review data in the patient record including history, lab data, radiological studies, progress notes, respiratory and cardiovascular monitoring data.
5. Document / record respiratory therapy data as required by Departmental /Nursing Home policy. Communicate data to appropriate members of the healthcare team.
6. Assess patientâ€s overall cardiopulmonary status by inspection /auscultation to determine: general appearance, breathing pattern, character of cough, sputum production, and breath sounds.
7. Interview patient to determine: orientation, dyspnea, activities of daily living, social support, nutritional status, and learning needs.
8. Perform and interpret bedside procedures to include: pulse oximetry.
9. Select, assemble, and check the following equipment for proper function, operation, and cleanliness: oxygen administration devices, humidifiers.
10. Demonstrate the ability to explain various procedures being performed to other employees, patients, or patient family members.
11. Initiate, conduct, or modify respiratory care techniques in an emergency situation.
12. Communicate results of therapy to appropriate members of the healthcare team and when appropriate after therapy as per Respirator Protocols
13. Monitor mechanical ventilator patients to include: airway pressures, tidal volumes, respiratory rate, I:E ratio, FIO2, cuff pressure, and alarm settings.
14. Modify mechanical ventilation to include recommendations in modifications of the respiratory care plan.
15. Assessment of mechanical ventilator patients on a daily basis for weaning parameters.
16. Instruct, initiate, and adjust mechanical nasal mask and negative pressure ventilation to achieve adequate spontaneous and artificial ventilation under a supervision of a registered respiratory therapist.
17. Cuff pressure monitoring, tracheotomy care, and adjustments in airway humidification Systems under direct supervision of a registered respiratory therapist.
18. Administer medicated aerosol therapy, encourage bronchopulmonary hygiene, and when indicated assist in suctioning of bronchopulmonary secretions.
19. Make necessary modifications in therapeutic procedures based on patient response.
20. Modify oxygen and specialty gas therapy and make changes in mode, flow, and concentration when appropriate setting.
21. Able to change tracheostomies under direct supervision of a registered respiratory therapist.
Position SpecificationsEducation: high school diploma graduate of approved respiratory care program. License: NYS Respiratory therapist license. Work Experience: One yea r of clinical experience preferred. (clinical rotation from approved respiratory program accepted). Working Conditions: required as needed to working patient care areas and special care units. need to be able to communicate well with other healthcare workers, family and patients. Physical DEMANDS: REQUIRES FREQUENT WALKING, STANDING, BENDING, CLIMBING UP AND DOWN STAIRS. REQUIRES GOOD MANUAL DEXTERITY IN ORDER TO UITLIZE RT EQUIPMENT. OCCASIONAL LIFTING / POSTIONING / PUSHING EQUIPMENT AND PATIENTS WITH ASSISTANCE UP TO 200LBS. Mental Demands: MUST BE ABLE TO DEAL WITH EMERGENCY OR CRISIS SITUATIONS UNDER STRESSFUL CONDITIONS WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT THEIR DECISIONS IMPACT PATIENT CARE. MUST BE ABLE TO INTERPRET COMPLEX / TECHNICAL PROFESSIONAL DATA/ TEST RESULTS / RECORDS. Equipment Operated: VENTILATORS / OXYGEN DEVICES / MEDICAL COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDERS / HUMIDIFICATION DEVICES / BLOOD SAMPLING AND ANALYZING DEVICES. Supervision Received: GENERAL SUPERVISION AS NEEDED.
