This is a hybrid position.

Accurately assigns CPT and ICD codes for transcribed Pathology and Cytology reports so that they are billed in a timely manner. The Certified Professional Coder follows all correct coding guidelines, as defined by the centers for Medicare and Medicaid services (CMS), National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI), all relevant federal and state regulations.

  • Protect the security of medical records to ensure that confidentiality is maintained.

  • Review records for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulations.

  • Records appropriate CPT and ICD codes on the reports or in the computer according to Pathologist's documentation.

  • Enter data, such as demographic characteristics, history and extent of disease, diagnostic procedures, or treatment into computer.

  • Identify, compile, abstract, and code patient data, using standard classification systems.

  • Consult classification manuals to locate information about disease processes.

  • Never upcodes or bills for "implied services" but only those described.

  • Resolve or clarify codes or diagnoses with conflicting, missing, or unclear information by consulting with Pathologists and/or General Manager.

  • Enters case numbers coded and ready for shipment to the billing service on a spreadsheet to ensure all cases are billed. Reconciles outstanding cases that were not billed by the billing service.

  • Compiles cancer cases from billing service and sends information to MO Cancer Registry on a quarterly basis.

  • Advises of upcoming changes in ICD and CPT codes, as well as NCCI edits.

  • Issues hardship letters to patients after receiving appropriate documentation from physician office or hospital.

  • Reviews NKC Hospital Pathology/Cytology reports for coding accuracy and sends a spreadsheet reporting any changes to appropriate contacts at North Kansas City Hospital.

  • Makes note of any report deficiencies observed while coding

  • Other duties as assigned

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

  • 5 plus years of experience in Medical Coding Pathology experience preferred

  • AACC Certification

  • Computer Knowledge

  • Type rate 50-60 wpm
