Overview:
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) works with providers, nursing, and patient care techs to help support patient care needs on the inpatient med/surg rehab unit. In coordination and as delegated by the nurse, the CMA may complete the following tasks, but not limited to taking patient vital signs, performs dressing changes, passes non-controlled and non-intravenous medications, and supports admission and discharge tasks on the unit.

Responsibilities:
- Assess patient status through interview, observation, and basic physical assessment as delegated by the nurse
- Assist in developing, implementing, and modifying individualized plans of care in collaboration with the care team
- Monitor, evaluate, and document patient progress; report changes and seek assistance as needed
- Perform select clinical duties within scope, including vital signs, medication and vaccine administration (oral, IM, SUBQ), wound care, enemas, chart review, admissions/discharges, and patient education
- Prioritize assignments and support care for non-complex and select complex patients under nurse direction
- Collaborate with nurses and the interdisciplinary team to coordinate care from admission through discharge
- Participate in bedside shift reports, intentional rounding, and proactive communication of patient needs
- Promote patient safety, quality standards, national patient safety goals, and evidence-based practice
- Provide culturally sensitive education using appropriate teaching strategies, including teach-back methods
Qualifications:
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Graduate of an accredited program for Medical Assistants (Certificate, diploma, or Associate’s Degree) required.
Experience:
- Graduate of a registered apprenticeship program with two (2) years of clinical experience or graduate of an online program or on the job training program with three (3) years of clinical experience required.
License(s)/Certification(s):
- Certified or Registered Medical Assistant through one of the following required:
- National Healthcareer Association
- American Association of Medical Assistants
- National Center for Competency Testing
- National Certified Medical Assistant
- National Association of Health Professionals
- American Registry of Medical Assistants
- American Allied Health
- American Medical Technologists
- Certified Medical Administrative Assistant through the National Healthcareer Association
- Certified Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association required within 30 days of hire.
- IA/IL Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training in state(s) where providing care required within 90 days of hire.
- IA/IL Adult Dependent Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training in state(s) where providing Care required within 90 days of hire.
