DESCRIPTION:

        • Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University Hawaii may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part time employees.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the daily physical and virtual operations of the Veterans Resource Center, ensuring a welcoming, professional space.
  • Assist with the intake, verification, and preliminary review of VA education benefit files (e.g., Post-9/11 GI Bill, Chapter 31/35) to prepare them for official campus certification.
  • Act as a peer lead by helping train, schedule, and assign daily tasks to other student workers, front desk staff, or VA work-study peers.
  • Track inventory of center resources, monitor basic operational needs, and assist in drafting budget requests for center activities.
  • Gather baseline data on center usage, event attendance, and student tracking to generate monthly activity summaries for the Director.
  • Serve as a primary peer point of contact, guiding incoming military-connected students through the initial campus onboarding process.
  • Direct student veterans to essential campus resources, including financial aid, registration, academic advising, and the No?eau Center.
  • Assist in designing and organizing transitional peer workshops focusing on student-veteran orientation, campus life, and peer mentoring.
  • Support the planning, setup, and execution of campus military events, resource fairs, and Veterans Day recognition programming.
  • Act as a student ambassador to help connect UHWO with local veteran service networks and student organizations like ASUHWO.
  • Serve as an informed resources to campus faculty, staff, and administrators regarding current issues impacting veteran students or opportunities for the university to expand the effectiveness of its support efforts.
  • Coordinates daily scheduling, task assignments, and workspace workflows for center student staff.
  • Flags and prioritizes complex VA benefit processing bottlenecks for review by the supervising authority.
  • Exercises independent judgment when managing peer disputes, coordinating workshop logistics, or resolving daily visitor needs.
  • Works under the supervision of the Director of Compliance (or designated staff member).
  • Work is reviewed through project completions, data accuracy, and regular status check-ins.
  • Peer coordinates other Center Student Volunteers or VA Work-Study Assistants.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possession of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited University/College in good standing; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Demonstrated experience or strong functional knowledge of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs education benefits and terminology.
  • Possession of, or ability to rapidly obtain and maintain, a valid drivers license and federal military base access credentials (e.g., DBIDS) for off-campus outreach tasks.
  • Possession of, or ability to rapidly obtain and maintain, a certification as School Certifying Official (SCO) to assist the current School Certifying Official (SCO) in Enrollment Management.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, strong data entry accuracy, and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality (FERPA compliance).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a proven track record of dependability and self-direction.
  • Familiarity with the community-based Veterans Service Organizations and the ability to coordinate activities with them.
