Compensation Range: $23/hr - $26/hr commensurate with experience.

Overview:

The Housing Works Inc. Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) Program is a collaboration between Housing Works and the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice (MOCJ) to provide individuals 18 years of age and older with open legal cases with comprehensive, holistic behavioral health services in lieu of jail or prison. Individuals with open cases in Brooklyn or Manhattan criminal or supreme courts are eligible for the following court-mandated services: case management, substance use and mental health services, individual counseling, group level interventions and peer support.

Reporting to the Clinical Coordinator, the Counselor will be primarily responsible for providing individual counseling for clients with a history or active substance use or behavioral health needs, facilitating evidence-based group level interventions, supporting clients non-compliant with the court mandates and promoting engagement and retention in program services. The ideal candidate will have an active NYS CASAC license or previous experience providing substance misuse or behavioral health counseling and experience providing services for individuals within the court-mandated treatment sector.

 

Responsibilities:

Primary:

  • Assist with conducting LCSMI risk-needs assessments with newly referred clients as needed.
  • Provides individual counseling in accordance with clients’ court mandates with clients assigned to caseload.
  • Facilitates three to four evidence-based group counseling sessions weekly.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary case conferences and care coordination activities.
  • Work closely with clients to promote positive engagement in services and to maintain compliance with court mandates.
  • Engage in crisis intervention as needed.
  • Participate and support clients through discharge planning and connection to after care services prior to program completion.
  • Thoroughly and frequently document client engagement and services provided within the electronic record system.
  • Actively participate in program, department and agency meetings.
  • Promotes Housing Works’ core values in day to day activities.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor

Secondary:

  • Provide culturally competent services in accordance to Housing Works policies and practices.
  • Ability to work with clients with diverse and varying levels of service needs.
  • Works collaboratively with other team members within the Justice Initiatives Department and cross-agency.

 

Requirements:

  • Associate’s Degree required in social services, psychology, social work or other related field.
  • Active NYS CASAC license preferred.

The following are qualifications and requirements of the position:

  • Minimum 1 year experience providing individual or group level counseling.
  • Experience working with individuals involved or impacted by the criminal legal system.
  • Experience working with individuals court-mandated to engage in treatment services.
  • Strong written documentation and communication skills
  • Good problem-solving skills and ability to work autonomously
  • Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, required
  • Experience utilizing EMR systems.

The following additional competencies are viewed as important to success in this position:

  • Preferably bi-lingual in Spanish.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent or proficient technical skills to perform tasks related to Microsoft Office, email and case management systems.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with the team.
  • Dependability and reliability to arrive and depart timely for scheduled shift.
  • Ability to travel within the boroughs via public transportation.
