Custodial staff are responsible for cleaning and maintaining classrooms, laboratories, offices, and other assigned campus facilities. The Floor and Carpet Care Technician specializes in floor care and serves as a member of the Carpet and Hard Floor Crew, providing comprehensive maintenance and restoration of flooring surfaces throughout the university. The successful candidate will contribute to creating an environment that supports learning, research, and campus operations.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assesses thestate of the floors and carpets and determine cleaning material and techniquethat will be utilized.
  • Operatesvarious carpet and floor care machines such as truck mount carpet cleaning machine,portable carpet extractor, carpet drying equipment; airmovers/dehumidifier; Floor care includes stripping machine, waxer/buffer, waterpick-ups, etc.
  • Clean vehicleand/or detail at end of each shift.
  • Sweeps, mops,polishes and strips floors in rooms and halls.
  • Vacuums, spotcleans and/or extracts carpets, and furniture using commercial vacuum cleanersand extraction equipment.
  • Reportsmalfunctions of bathroom fixtures, light fixtures and/or damages to room andhall furnishings to Supervisor.
  • Initiates workorders for repair of equipment/maintenance.
  • Movesfurniture, equipment or fixtures as required.
  • Providesquality customer service.
  • Assures allsafety precautions are followed in the workplace.
  • Communicateseffectively in a professional manner and is a team player.
  • Dries carpetwith drying machine.
  • Other dutiesmay be assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Exceptionalcustomer service skills.
  • Detailedknowledge of carpet and floor cleaning chemicals.
  • Cleaning Chemicals andEquipment: Understanding of proper use, dilution, and safety procedures forcleaning agents and floor care equipment (e.g., buffers, extractors, vacuums).
  • FlooringMaterials: Knowledge of different types of flooring (e.g., tile, vinyl, carpet,hardwood) and appropriate cleaning methods for each.
  • Safety andSanitation Standards: Familiarity with OSHA regulations, Material Safety DataSheets (MSDS), and infection control procedures.
  • MaintenanceProcedures: Understanding of routine and deep-cleaning schedules, includingstripping, waxing, and sealing floors.
  • Operation ofFloor Care Equipment: Proficiency in using machines such as auto scrubbers,burnishers, carpet extractors, and wet/dry vacuums.
  • TimeManagement: Ability to prioritize tasks and complete work efficiently withinscheduled timeframes.
  • Attention toDetail: Skill in identifying areas needing extra attention and ensuring highstandards of cleanliness.
  • FollowInstructions: Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions,including safety protocols.
  • WorkIndependently and in Teams: Flexibility to work alone or collaboratively withothers.
  • Adaptability:Willingness to adjust to changing schedules, tasks, or cleaning priorities.
  • PhysicalStamina: Capability to stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods andhandle physically demanding tasks.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High schooldiploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Three yearsof relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and workexperience.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years professional work experience as a carpet or floor care technician.
  • Two years of experience operating industrial cleaning machines (i.e., professional truck-mounted carpet cleaners, portable carpet cleaners, buffers, extractors, auto scrubbers, and propane burnishers.).
