Position Information

Build the future-one project at a time! Bismarck State College is seeking a dependable and hands-on Carpentry Lab Assistant to support our residential carpentry program. This role plays an important part in helping students gain real-world construction experience while maintaining safe, organized, and industry-aligned learning environments. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide operational, instructional, and on-site support for the residential carpentry program and facilities.
  • Supervise and support students during lab and construction site activities under faculty direction.
  • Reinforce safe work practices, proper use of PPE, and adherence to safety procedures.
  • Assist with construction projects, lab preparation, materials management, and daily operations.
  • Support hands-on learning experiences aligned with industry standards and workforce expectations.
  • Help maintain safe, organized, and efficient shop, classroom, and job-site environments.

Duties

Construction Work Site Duties

  • Support student skill development by reinforcing industry standards, construction methods, and safety practices.
  • Supervise students on job sites and ensure proper use of PPE and safety procedures.
  • Assist with coordination of residential construction projects and daily work-site operations.
  • Maintain organization and accountability of tools, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Order, track, and assist with inventory of materials and supplies.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work environments.
  • Communicate and coordinate with subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers to support project timelines.
  • Identify damaged tools or equipment and coordinate repair or replacement needs.

Shop/Classroom Duties

  • Open and close shop and classroom spaces.
  • Assist in maintaining organized and safe instructional environments.
  • Monitor equipment condition and report maintenance or repair needs.
  • Assist with lab setup, preparation, and cleanup.
  • Provide in-lab support to students during hands-on instructional activities.
  • Pick up consumable supplies and materials from vendors while following purchasing procedures.
  • Support faculty with classroom presentations, demonstrations, and instructional activities.

Miscellaneous Duties

  • Work a standard 40-hour work week, typically Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break.
  • Communicate student concerns, safety issues, or conduct matters through established procedures.
  • Support innovation, continuous improvement, and operational efficiency within the department.
  • Assist faculty with operational and project-related needs as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in residential construction, carpentry, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of construction tools, equipment, materials, and safety practices.
  • Ability to supervise and support students in a hands-on learning environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Basic computer skills.
