PRIMARY FUNCTION
This is semi-skilled and unskilled work in the maintenance of the Park system throughout the City of New Haven. Work involves the operation of light equipment and vehicles as well as the performance of light and heavy labor tasks. Work is performed under the general supervision of a supervisor and is reviewed through observation of results.
Up to 40 hours per week, generally follow a 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. schedule but may vary on assignment. Seasonal employment not to exceed 120 days. New hires will be hired at base $18 per hour, returning Seasonal staff may be considered for up to $22 per hour.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Operates other grass-cutting equipment, edger, weed-whackers, hedge trimmers, hand pruners, backpack leaf blowers • Operates jackhammer, small rollers, small power washers • Assists landscaping and litter-picking crews • Transports materials to and from jobs • Assists in the cleaning and general maintenance of playground equipment and recreational areas • Cleans and maintains ball courts and fencelines in parks • Assists with repairs to park structures such as fence posts • Cleans and repairs park facility buildings as assigned • Assists in the maintenance of park areas • Cuts grass, picks up paper, litter, rubbish, and debris at assigned areas • Helps to empty receptacles into trash trucks and/or trailers • Rakes and picks up leaves, mulches, and assists in general grounds beautification • Trims shrubbery and bushes • Tars, sands, and patches asphalt • Digs holes and ditches, shovels, and assists with plowing snow • Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school, a minimum of 3 months experience in the use of hand tools, power tools, and light equipment, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

• Some knowledge of one or more construction or maintenance trades • Ability to drive small, rugged terrain vehicles and trucks, and to operate light equipment • Ability to perform semi-skilled and unskilled labor tasks without close supervision • Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions, and to keep simple records • Knowledge of safety precautions which are necessary when using equipment • Ability to perform manual tasks requiring physical strength and endurance • Skill in the use and care of tools, machines, and equipment used in park maintenance • Ability to work independently or as part of a work crew, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and coworkers
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
• Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of Connecticut drivers license

SALARY BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a General Fund Non-Tested position. This seasonal position is not eligible to receive medical benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, holiday union membership, or union contractual benefits. Any period of seasonal employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment. Persons may not be employed in two concurrent positions with the City and/or the Board of Education at the same time. Seasonal employment not to exceed 120 calendar days.
