Career Specialist

The Career Specialist is part of C3: Creativity, Careers, Community, which incorporates three distinct yet related and collaborative entities. This position is responsible for advising students in career-related topics, developing and maintaining relationships with on-and off-campus stakeholders, and supporting the college's mission to prepare students for success after graduation.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

• Responsible for educating students on a range of career development and exploration topics through one-on-one appointments, presentations, workshops, and print/virtual resources.
• Use interest assessments, interviews and individual planning to help students, (and alumni as requested), to evaluate their interests, skills, and abilities and develop realistic career goals.
• Provide guidance, coaching, and support to students throughout their career development process; including major/career exploration, identifying and participating in experiential learning opportunities, and navigating the transition from Coe College to a professional workplace or additional educational opportunities.
• Maintain a working knowledge of aspects of early-career development practices and advise students on skills/strategies for resume/cover letter writing, job/internship searching, interviewing, networking, and applying for various roles.
• Plan, coordinate, and facilitate events for students designed to educate them on career topics, teach new skills, or connect with local community leaders and/or alumni.
• Work collaboratively with faculty and other internal/external constituents to support experiential learning opportunities for students, discuss collaborative programming that may appeal to students, and ensure practicum or internship for credit experiences are conducted in accordance with academic requirements.
• Participate in strategic planning, providing input and guidance for college initiatives related to career, creativity and connections.
• Serve as a career liaison to faculty, academic departments, and designated student populations or majors in order to develop a culture of career readiness across campus while also providing targeted resources and programming.
• Assist with the development, implementation, and/or maintenance of student focused initiatives including, but not limited to, the Off Campus Federal Work Study Program, On Campus Student Employment, First Year Seminar, networking events, or other items as directed.
• Share planning and impact reports with faculty and department heads.
• Keep consistent and professional notes on all student appointments.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor Degree required. Business Administration, Psychology, Education, Human Resources fields of study preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 1-2 years of recruitment, education, experiential learning, or career services experience.
• Possess exceptional communication skills in a variety of settings including 1:1 student appointments, workshops, and classroom presentations.
• Maintain a student-centered approach and work with others to create an environment that is welcoming, inclusive, and supportive of every student at Coe College.
• Ability to be autonomous and effectively collaborate with others while completing regular duties as well as being flexible when responding to issues that may require a sense of urgency.
• Demonstrate innovation, creativity, and outside-the-box thinking/problem solving while being dedicated to high-quality work, professionalism, and results.

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:

• Position Specific: Knowledge of topics related to career exploration and development and the ability to advise students on the importance of engaging in this process.
• Possess a basic understanding of aspects of career exploration and development as well as the ability to advise students on these topics.
• Ability to develop metrics and assessments to track student outcomes and determine program success.
• Strong background in technology, especially those associated with jobs, networking, and other career-related programming.
• Remain knowledgeable about trends within the job market and industry specific trends.
• Participate in professional development opportunities including conferences, workshops, or trainings to increase knowledge or grow professional network.
• Computer proficiency in Google Suite (Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drive), MS Office (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and database systems such as Handshake or Raisers Edge.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

• Ability to navigate several buildings on campus including stairs.
• Occasionally push/life/pull 20 lbs.
• Typical office setting – stationary for several hours at a time.
• Ability to travel to and participate in events, including occasional events in the evenings or weekends.
